Reports of strange, vividly colored critters have generated excitement at the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo. And they resemble this in appearance:
The San Diego Zoo and Nintendo of America are inviting adventurers of all ages to join the hunt for these new arrivals: the tiny, plant-like Pikmin game characters, which are playable on the Nintendo Switch family of systems, starting today, October 1, until November 28. The Pikmin are found in patches of dirt, among blades of grass, and among the strange creatures that inhabit their surroundings in this series of adventures and puzzles. There are various varieties of Pikmin, ranging from the fire-resistant Red Pikmin (like the one above) to the swimming Blue Pikmin. Additionally, children will be encouraged to grow, gather, and guide—to deepen their appreciation of the natural world around them, to compile images and memories of Pikmin in the Zoo, and to lead their friends and family through thrilling, themed areas throughout Wildlife Explorers Basecamp—just like they did in the Pikmin video game series.
Loyal and inquisitive, pikmin can aid in directing your exploration of Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. Here are some tips to maximize your time there:
- Think about going this October where all month long, the San Diego Zoo will be offering youngsters 11 and under free entrance with a purchased adult ticket in honor of Kids Free Month.
- Visit the Pikmin pop-up tent near Spineless Marvels on any weekend from October 1 through November 24 to check in at the My Nintendo kiosk and collect 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points*, which can be used on my.nintendo.com for special digital and physical goodies. At the pop-up tent, visitors may also win a Nintendo gift bag by fulfilling certain requirements, like taking a picture of a Pikmin in the Zoo!
The Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo aims to encourage kids to explore the outdoors, engage in active play, get up close and personal with new animals, and grow in their empathy for them. Families will discover all that Wildlife Explorers Basecamp has to offer as they engage, climb, scramble, and bounce in creative nature play zones during this special event period while searching for Pikmin. Through a range of unique experiences with animals, Basecamp provides families and kids with the chance to engage with the natural world like never before and learn the value of wildlife conservation.
