Introduction/Information about Nowhere
Nowhere, by developer and publisher Midnight Forge, is a nordic inspired narrative horror story talking about what happened to the Norse gods after the events of Ragnarok. While horror games are not my most favorite genre, I was happy to see how there was detective-like gameplay implemented within the horror-like elements. After playing the preview demo of Nowhere, I would say that this game has a great concept and idea, that with more development time, will become even better.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Nowhere is simple so far. Players can move and interact with different objects and evidence within the game, as well as check their journal of all the different information and objects they have collected. Players will also have the ability to focus, in order to find said evidence and objects more easily. Those are the main controls of the game. As players start the game, they will start out in a forest. Their main objective will be to find four missing people and get out of the forest. One thing I enjoy about the forest is how there is no one linear path to follow. Players can explore and search the forest whichever way they want, so where they want to start will be up to them. As players search around the forest, they will find different objects such as photos, letters, etc. Finding these objects will help them get closer to finding the missing people and find out what is happening in the forest, so I would recommend using the focus ability on any area that looks suspicious.
The forest will seem very peaceful for players exploring at first. However, that all changes when they hear the blow of a horn. When a horn plays, the sky turns red and monstrous creatures come out. The player will not have many options from these monsters other than to run and hide. If players can find a hiding spot, then I would recommend taking a look at what information they’ve gathered and wait for the sky to turn back to normal. With all this in mind, players must gather all the information they can in order to find out what happened to the missing people and get out of the forest before the monsters can find them.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe the game Nowhere has a very nice concept and idea that will only seem to get better with time. As I played the game, I was having fun searching for everything and trying to figure out what had happened in the forest, and while the game is still in development, I was still having plenty of fun. If you are the kind of player that enjoys detective-like gameplay with horror-like elements, then I would recommend grabbing this game.
