The title says it all. Paint the Town Red is a first-person area game by developers South East Games, in which you will quickly see situations escalate into total violence and the walls with be covered in red pixels. At first glance you might think this is a PG-13 type of violence, but after 30 seconds you will see it is brutal R rated kind of mayhem. If you are into challenges or mindless violence like Postal, then this is definitely up your alley.
There are 3 game modes once you arrive at the main screen: Scenarios, Arena, and Beneath. I only took a look at the Scenarios to get a feel for the gameplay. There are not too many scenarios to choose from, but they include: A biker bar, a disco, a prison, and a pirate cove (in the daytime or the evening). Each scenario starts off in the same way. You enter the scene and life goes on as normal. Going to certain off-limit areas can spark the purge, like reaching for the katana in the Disco level. Most of the time, you will start things by punching someone or attacking first.
You can grab A LOT of things and turn them into weapons, from food to furnishing and from hair accessories to ninja stars. You can pick everything up and either throw or use it. You only have a few good uses out of each object until it breaks. Its final strike can often leave it inside of the person you are attacking. There is definitely an unwritten tier system, but it is common sense. A butcher’s knife is definitely going to do more damage than a whiskey glass. A pimp’s cane, though; that will shatter skulls and spread the red all around.
The goal is to be the last blocky person left alive. There can be around 80 other people running around, and make no mistake: they will come for you. The endgame usually includes everyone chasing after you. Tougher people come out of the woodwork and provide a challenge. For example, the Yakuza guy in the disco arena is no joke. You can fight him even when the flesh has been shorn from his body; that skeleton will not stop for anything.
The gameplay is quick to master. What I did not realize at first was that once you start the fight, everyone breaks out into a free-for-all. All the controls are given to you when you enter the scenario. You can get a feeling for it, and you know you’ve made it when you pull a comb out of a guy’s afro and stab him with it. You can get creative in a very depraved way. Another thing to consider is that it is not so easy to kill people. They may go down, but that does not mean that they are down for the count just yet. You need to finish people off, and that’s when we see a lot of the red paint.
Overall, Paint the Town Red is not a sophisticated game. If you want to turn off, escape from life, and release some unwanted stress, then this is definitely a type of gory simulator you may want to add to your library. Are there any bugs? I’ve only found one that made me clip underneath the floor and die, but it’s a low poly polished bloodbath for the most part. I think a fair rating for this title would be a 9.5 out of 10. There is a lot of replayability here.

Xbox Review
I like to think of myself as the average Joe who grew up alongside video games. I have fun playing strategy games, RPGs, shooters, sandboxes, the whole shebang! Every game provides an experience whether it strikes you as profound, mundane, or someplace in between. I'd like to weigh in my two cents before you spend a single penny.
