Dauntless is an online co-op action RPG created by an independent studio made up of former BioWare, Riot, and Capcom developers called Phoenix Labs. The game is set to release later this year in open beta as a free-to-play game on PC.
Players will create their own character known in the world as Slayers. Slayers are elite warriors who risk life and limb to protect the world from Behemoths that are consuming everything that’s left in the land.
The demo on hand at PAX featured two Behemoths. The Behemoths are unique bosses each with their own set of challenges players will take out in order to grab that sweet, sweet loot to power up their characters. Kill bosses, collect rewards, power up. This is the gameplay loop they’re shooting for, and as of right now it seems both good enough to release and good enough to play for hours on end.
Running on the Unreal engine, Dauntless is a treat for the eyes. It has an aesthetic similar to Fortnite. During my playthrough, I was teamed up with two fellow PAX goers and a game developer. The developer went over the controls and then shot a flare into the sky so everyone could find him. The flares are fully customizable, and those who were at PAX were treated with an exclusive code that says “PAX.” Once we were all together we made a B-line to the Behemoth named Scarn. The fun began. With only a handful of pre-loaded characters to choose from for demo purposes I chose the one with dual-wielding chained blades. We threw everything we could at this beast of a creature and in the end, we all died.
Right now, there are five different weapon types with their own combo systems and special move. The game will feature 18 Behemoths at launch with plans to release even more in free updates. There will also be a customizable airship similar to the ships in Destiny. A deep robust crafting system should keep players hunting for loot to make the ultimate Slayer weapon.

I was born and raised in a town so small there were more cows than people. I joined the USAF as soon as I could, and I currently reside in San Antonio. I am a singer/songwriter on the side, but I've been a gamer since birth. I grew up with PlayStation and Nintendo, though, I don't discriminate between consoles and PC. I have a PC with a 3080, Steam Deck, and a PS5.
