Nintendo is back with one of its most popular game franchises, Pokémon, with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. We have been waiting for one of the newer Pokémon games to be available on Switch after Pokémon Lets Go!, which was more of a reboot to the original games.
We have tried Pokémon Shield, which was a refreshing new entry in the series, reason being it brings a lot of new mechanics in the series with a great story as well. Nintendo has this time removed the feature that was introduced in Pokémon Lets Go!, which had no battle during wild Pokémon encounter, and reintroduced the original battle mechanics. The story revolves around the usual small town kid who wants to be a Pokémon Trainer, and the game introduces the player customization with looks and weapons. Our player and his rival just want to be the best Pokémon trainers in the world and want to defeat the current undefeated champion and take on the trophy.
During the travel/adventure, the players take on a lot of challenges and uncover some hidden truth behind a mechanism that is called Dynamax or Gigantamax; in this form, the Pokémon takes on a huge form and some Pokémon that are Gigantamax have different looks than normal. Dynamax on other only increases the size of Pokémon and increases the health and attack. The camera angles have changed and in certain areas called wild areas you can move the cameras around and look at the whole location. Those areas have raids available that lets you catch Gigantamax Pokemons. During all the battles now the whole team gets exp. Its like sharing exp even though some Pokémon have not been used in the battle.
One big change this time around is that you don’t need a Pokémon to do certain action like swimming or flying as fast travel has been unlocked with the help of Flying taxis. Any town or location that you have visited during travel will be unlocked for you to take on flying taxis. One feature that has been kept in this game from Pokémon Lets Go! is that you can see wild Pokémon and you can avoid them. The gym battles are more fun now that you have to solve puzzles or go through random encounters with trainers before getting to the final stadium. In addition, this time gym battles happen inside stadiums where thousands of people are sitting on benches and watching you fight the gym leaders. Also, wild areas have camping options that let you interact with your Pokémon and do some cooking with them and get exp for your Pokémon.
There are bunches of things to explore in Pokémon Shield – the list keeps on increasing as we explore the game after the end of story. But so far, Pokémon Shield has been a great journey and an amazing new addition to the series franchise that will be going on for years to come. I would rate Pokémon Shield 9 stars out of 10.
