This is Gaming Cypher’s review for the captivating and ambitious puzzle adventure game Toki Tori 2+ by developer Two Tribes. The game has finally launched on the PlayStation 4 almost three years after launching on Steam and the Wii U eShop.
I got to play as a cute and addicting little yellow chick by simply walking either to the left or to the right, whistling (to bring creatures towards you), stomping (to chase creatures away or make a frog burp a huge bubble in which you get to fly up to where you need to go), climbing up or jumping down. You even get to whistle a learned song in order to return to the beginning of the stage should you want to.
Yet, do not let the simple controls fool you. Within each stage, you have to solve the progression puzzle as well as interact with either friend or foe. As you continue through the stages, the puzzles get progressively harder. Some are done in the daylight, while others are done in the dark, where you have to figure out how to move objects carried by crabs so that the light hits certain spots.
While there is no training stage or help throughout the game, I was able to figure out the fun puzzles, some more easily than others. Again, while the controls appear simple within themselves, figuring out when to use them and how to manipulate the surrounding area and the creatures within it becomes quite a challenging feat.
Toki Tori 2+’s puzzles set the center stage of the game. Some are challenging to the point of frustration, but I was still able to figure them out. I also found that I had to replay certain levels over, which became much easier once I figured out where I had to go and what had to be done. I wish that there was an in-game hint icon for those of us who do not wish to spend too much time trying to figure out how to progress, and yet, I also realized that this will take a way from the game.
I especially liked the bright yellow color of the little protagonist, the gorgeous scenery and the overall happy, feel-good vibe of the game. Even the darker scenes were cleverly depicted. Overall, I had a great time playing and enjoyed the satisfaction of solving each puzzle.
I would definitely recommend a BUY and score Toki Tori 2+ a 4/5.
