Daniel thought lucid dreaming was all fun and games until his childhood nightmares started to become real. In Radiant One, the newest game by Fntastic, you will follow Daniel through his dreams as he tries to figure out why these cloaked figures are targeting him and how to defeat them. Radiant One is a classic story driven point and click game for PC and iOS.
I really like these interactive stories and find that they generally have really great plot lines. Radiant One did not disappoint story wise. It was a little creepy, a little trippy, and had a great underlying message. However, when it came to controls, I personally think that playing it on a touchscreen device would be a lot easier to manage. Using a mouse it is a little bit harder and the controls seem a little unpredictable. Some of the actions shouldn’t be hard but if you don’t click it right then you may end up dying a couple of times like I did.
Besides the story, my favorite thing about this game was the art and music. Radiant One reminded me a lot of another game I reviewed, OPUS: Rocket of Whispers by Sigono Inc. The art style is similar in its simplicity. I really like this style and I am not sure why but seeing games in this style makes me want to play them. That is actually what originally grabbed my attention about this game. I was not disappointed. The simplicity of the style gave it a childlike feel which went with the theme very well. There were also several details in the environment that took this game to the next level.
Another way this game reminds me of OPUS: Rocket of Whispers is the music. Both games warn you that for the best experience you should wear headphones. If you see this warning you know the sound is going to be immersive. Radiant One’s music was just that. It set the mood and ambiance really well. I would honestly listen to the soundtrack in my spare time.
The thing that really disappointed me about this game was how short it was. I easily finished it in one sitting and I will admit that there is something nice about short and sweet games. However, I want more! This game had such an intriguing story and I wish it was drawn out a lot more. A brief narrative is given to sum up how Daniel discovered lucid dreaming and it quickly rushes through to the bad stuff happening. I would have liked a little more suspense and build up. There were also a couple things not explained by the resolution. I am all up for interpretations but I wish some aspects and details were explored further. There is also a lot of unexplained lore about these cloaked figures that are targeting Daniel. I honestly hope they are planning on a second game. I would be happy with a continuation of the last game or a new storyline set in the same universe. This game’s story and style just left me wanting more.
Overall, this game is great if you love story based games. It is short and sweet so you don’t have to dedicate a lot of time to the game if you don’t have a lot of time to kill. I would suggest getting the IOS version rather than the Steam if you want more control. I can’t wait to see what Fntastic has in store.
