Want to see what it’s like to run a restaurant enterprise with a satisfyingly wide range of customization options? Recipe for Disaster is made for you! After researching on google for “restaurant sim games”, I saw that many players are looking for the perfect simulator game that requires design and managing skills. Games such as “Overcooked” nails the food making process, but ends there. “Pizza Connection 3” includes hiring and logistics, but you’re stuck with making Pizza parlors!
Dapper Penguin Studios created the ultimate restaurant sim game, Recipe for Disaster, where you are challenged to create and run highly successful restaurants with a great level of variability each time you play. This game gives you the freedom to choose between multiple game modes. If you select “Campaign: A Chef’s Take,” you are launched into a campaign with 10 states, each with a unique set of objectives to overcome. Some examples include turning around a failing establishment or expanding a menu after a new burger recipe goes viral. In “Freeplay” mode, you are given the freedom to design your own restaurant, setting your own starting conditions and objectives.
When starting, I was immediately impressed with the game’s UI and visual aesthetic. Peaceful music trails in the background as you are given an option to customize your avatar from skin tone to style of clothing. Like an RPG, you are also given a list of skills that you can increase (but only a limited amount), and traits that can either make gameplay easier or harder.
Going between tabs, checking the “to-do” list, and even reviewing the emotional state of your employees was very satisfying and straightforward. The game plays like most other tycoon management games, where you can move the camera with WASD and change the angle with Q and E or the mouse wheel.
The tutorial section is intuitive and easy to understand, showing you how to manage a restaurant through simple scenarios and a short to-do list. I don’t think it was too much of a drag, but the right amount of information. Overall, The gameplay was a blast! Not only did it move at a nice pace, I was also really enjoying the customization options. Perhaps in the future they will add more furniture to choose from, but I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with different floor layouts and interior design.
Things you can do: hire employees based on skill and salary, create an automated workflow, source ingredients and make new recipes, edit the menu and set prices, review customer feedback and recommendations, mediate employee disagreements, maintain the cleanliness of the space, and much more.
To conclude, I think Recipe for Disaster is wonderful for those who enjoy management/ tycoon/ restaurant sim games. It has the right amount of difficulty, satisfying game mechanics, and a great art style.
Recipe for Disaster is launching today, August 5th for PC via Steam, so look out for it!
