The world tournament on Dota 2 finished just a few days ago. The International 2022 was full of disappointment and failures. Both players and fans had unclear feelings after the end of the match. The final prize pool of the tournament was $18.9 million. Tundra Esports became the winner.
The International 2022 Dota 2 Results
20 teams from all over the world participated in the main Dota 2 competition. Finally, the results were as follows:
⦁ Winner: Tundra Esports Europe – $8.49M in prize money
⦁ 2nd place: Team Secret, Europe – $2.45 million
⦁ 3rd place: Team Liquid, Sweden – $1.7 million
⦁ 4th place: Team Aster (China) – $1.1 million
⦁ 5th–6th place: PSG.LGD (China) and Thunder Awaken (Peru) — $660,000 each.
Thousands of fans made bets on GGBet Dota 2 and won money as well. However, due to unexpected disappointments, not all predictions were profitable. Some fans were disappointed by the following failures.
Most Unexpected Disappointments
Team Spirit failed
Team Spirit, the winner of the past The International, took 6th place at the end of the group stage. Because of this, they got into the lower bracket of the playoffs, in which they had no room for error. The first round of the lower bracket was held in the bo1 format; that is, up to one victory. Thus, they lost to the Philippine team BOOM Esports and took 13th-16th place.
Team Spirit’s performance in the group stage disappointed both viewers and analysts. They expected to see the team at least in the TOP-3, but the Spirits lost to lesser-known rivals. There was an impression that players were too self-confident in this tournament.
The fiasco of Chinese teams
Only three teams from China participated in the tournament, namely, RNG, Aster, and PSG.LGD. The last one was predicted to take part in the grand final but something went wrong. The play style of the Chinese teams turned out to be irrelevant in this patch; they were unable to adapt to the new conditions. The European teams played tougher, while the Chinese players could not answer them.
First, RNG lost to European Entity in the first round of the lower bracket. Then, PSG.LGD fell to their fellow citizens from Aster. In the final stages of the tournament, the European Team Liquid defeated them too. As a result, Team Aster finished in 4th place. This is the worst result for Chinese teams since 2013.
The higher you climb, the harder it hurts to fall
The American Evil Geniuses confidently took 1st place in the group stage. The fans of the team wanted the club to raise the main trophy of the competition this year. However, the team lost 2:0 in the upper bracket to the Peruvian team Thunder Awaken. And then, they also lost to Beastcoast, another team from Peru, in the lower bracket. As a result, 9-12 place and the complete disbandment of the team.
Most Unexpected Performances
- Teams from South America impressed analysts with their high level of skills.
Three teams from Peru — Thunder Awaken, Hokori, and Beastcoast — made it through the group stage and gave a serious rebuff to the tournament favorites. In the group stage, the South American teams won or drew with the favorites – PSG.LGD, Team Spirit, and Tundra.
As a result, Thunder Awaken took an honorable 5th-6th place along with PSG.LGD. This is the highest-ever result for a South American team.
- The last chance teams are in the top three.
Team Liquid and Team Secret received an invitation to The International thanks to the last-chance qualifiers, in which the last two trips were up for grabs right before the start of the championship.
How was the Final?
Team Secret and Tundra met three times in the tournament. First – in the group stage, where Tundra effortlessly defeated their opponents with a score of 2:0. In total, both games lasted less than an hour.
Then, these teams met in the final of the upper bracket; the game was incredibly epic. For Tundra, the match turned out to be much more difficult than all the previous ones.
However, Tundra Esports did not leave a single chance for Team Secret in the final. The final went “one-sided”: Tundra won with a score of 3:0. The last time Team Liquid won the main trophy with such a result was in 2017.
Tundra won thanks to the competent selection of heroes and well-coordinated teamplay. They often initiated battles that were convenient for them and controlled the map. Tundra also benefited from the weak level of skills of the main player of the Secrets – Remco Crystallis Arets. He could not win back the advantage of the opponents and lagged behind them in terms of the level of the hero and the accumulated gold.
