This is Gaming Cypher’s iPAD review for A New Beginning by Hamburg-based developer and publisher Daedalic Entertainment.
Right off the bat the game greeted us with gorgeous scenery filled with background details and meticulous artwork. A New Beginning is infused with comic-style cut scenes as well as a great and interesting storyline. There was just the right balance of interactive gameplay, filled with fun exploration and then you get to take a short break while observing the comic-book style cut scenes.
A New Beginning is the story of Bent Svensson who was forced out of bio-engineering and bitterly made to return to his private life. Everything changes as he meets Faye who basically asks him to help her save the world from destruction due to pollution and environmental hazards. Even though Faye’s story sounds amazingly sci-fi to him, as she claims to be from the future, Bent still decides to help her recover his Algae research in order to help save the human race.
The controls worked flawlessly on the iPAD. Just click, select or drag items to where you want them to go. Faye had clever remarks letting you know whether or not you are on the right path or not. The challenging fun was putting items together in order to make things work for you. An example is combining the strong rod with the rope in order to make a ladder come down so that you can climb it. You also had to take combined objects apart in order to re-use them in a different way.
Some puzzles might take you a while, but the developer cleverly installed a Skip icon so that just in case you became frustrated and could not figure out the puzzle, you could still progress into the next cut scene. In addition, if you found some cut scenes to be too long, there was a skip button on the bottom of the screen where you just swipe and it will take you to the next scene.
The only glitch that we ran into is a cut scene that appeared twice so it took us a while to figure out how to progress. This happened earlier in Chapter 1 when Faye needed to take a boat in order to find the San Francisco team. She kept insisting that she did not know where to go, even though we already viewed the cut scene where Sven told her the destination. Finally, we climbed up to the rooftop again (after going everywhere else searching for clues) and then had to view the same cut scene again. We were then free to progress.
Overall, we found A New Beginning to be highly enjoyable with great exploration, puzzle solving and engaging storyline.
We recommend a definite BUY and give the game a 4.5/5
