Introduction/Information about game
The game Romancelvania is a game, by developer The Deep End Games and publisher 2124 Publishing, that is part of Steam’s Next Fest for October. For anyone who doesn’t know, Steam Next Fest is a week-long celebration with hundreds of free, playable demos for upcoming games. This game is a platform side-scrolling romance action game where players play as the vampire Drac who is forced to take part in a reality dating show made by the Grim Reaper. For me, I do not really enjoy the romance parts of the game, but this is primarily because of personal preference. However, I do enjoy action games. From what I played, I would say the demo was pretty good, especially for what has been made and developed so far.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Romancelvania consists mostly of side scrolling action. The game starts with Drac moping on his throne for years about his relationship issues. After getting an invite from his friends to play poker, he decides to finally get up and get out. After this, the player gets an idea of how the game will play. The player at this point can move, jump around and attack with a sword. Something I thought was interesting and executed pretty well was the 3D graphics mixed with the look and aesthetic of 2D pixel graphics. I was not expecting that kind of look for the game, especially for that look to be done as well as it was.
The player continues to learn how to platform in this game with Drac. Platforming seems easier with a double jump, as well as a bit of a hover before falling. The jump is also very high, so I am sure players will quickly and easily learn to skip certain areas. As the player continues to move through the level, they will encounter enemies that will try to stop them. Since this is just the tutorial, the player can easily wipe the enemies out. Near the end of the level, the player will get a second weapon (a spear), which will give the player different options to attack their enemies. Once the player finally makes his way to his friends, he is told that he has been tricked by the Grim Reaper. The Grim Reaper explains how his years of moping around is a problem and that he needs to fix this, and he decides to do this by making Drac take part in a dating show. The primary goal of the demo at this point is now for Drac to find love through this reality dating show that the Grim Reaper is forcing him to be a part of.
Final thoughts
Overall, the game Romancelvavnia was not a bad action game. I enjoy action games, so I was glad to see the action for this game was done very well. Again, the romance parts I can do without, but I also know there are players who enjoy those kinds of things in games. If you enjoy action games as well as romance, then this would be the game for you. The game has no official release date just yet. However, people can download the demo on Steam for free right now.
