Sally Face is a Nintendo Switch and PC game developed and published by Portable Moose. Inspired by 1990’s cartoons and personal nightmares, it is a five-part, episodic series that is a psychological, adventure, puzzle game. It follows the unsettling adventure of a boy named Sal with a prosthetic face. He uses a handheld video game system to speak with the dead and learn their stories. Sal and his friends unfortunately discover something terrible after a string of mysterious murders that casts over their small town.
The controls of the game are very simple. You just use the left joystick to move, and you can use “A” to interact with things. “X” is for looking at your inventory and what tasks you need to do. Later in the game, you will be able to use your video game system to find spirits, which will use the “Y” and “R” buttons for interaction. You don’t need to move the camera, as it is a linear camera angle. This means that you move from side to side only.
I feel that the game is more of a visual novel with some puzzles to do than an RPG or action game. There are not many fighting scenes or action scenes, mostly visual scenes to tell the story. Its main purpose is to tell the story of our main character, Sally Face, or Sal, about his adventures in the Addison apartments and other mysteries around the town. Some of the other characters that are in Sal’s circle of friends are Todd, Ashley, and Larry. Todd is the engineer of the group, Ashley is an artist who craves solving mysteries, and Larry is his best friend that lives in the apartment complex with Sal. This group of friends supports and helps Sal with the mysteries that unravel and the spirits that are lurking in Nockfell.
Due to it being an episodic game, there are five different acts for the story. Starting with episode one, where you are put into a disturbing dream sequence with Sal and his bandaged face. Each act is representative of a different period of Sal’s life when he reaches Nockfell. As you get further into the game, the characters also start to age, alongside changes to the environment. Despite it being mostly a visual novel, there are a lot of hidden achievements and content that you could discover and unlock within each episode. Examples being unlockable mini-games, achievements for certain dialogue, and secret items. Unlocking these do add onto the plot, allowing you to gain more insight into the story, while also feeling accomplished of discovering something that was cryptic and subtle. By doing so, it won’t muddle the story and you may be less confused than you were if you try to unlock all the hidden content in each episode.
The art style of the game is very unique, and it’s an art style that I haven’t seen before. I’m personally not attracted to its style, as some of the visuals were grotesque and not very attractive to look at. However, I think that the art style is the way it is due to the story and plot of the game. It is a game that is supposed to make you uncomfortable and feel a little spooked from certain events. The music of the game was also very fitting, and I liked it a lot. I especially liked the music that Larry and Sal listened to on his radio, considering that I’m not entirely a huge metal music fan.
For me, I thought the game’s pacing was a little slow. It might be because I personally don’t have the patience to solve puzzles and walk around environments trying to think about how to unlock the next chapter. Putting that aside however, even though I’m not the best at puzzle games, I really did enjoy the story of the game. The plot was interesting and there were a lot of plot twists that I wasn’t expecting. It was the visual novel elements and the story of the game that made me want to finish it, despite not having the patience of problem-solving.
Overall, I would recommend Sally Face to those who are interested in psychological horror, puzzle games, and a love for solving mysteries.

Nintendo Switch Review
I really love playing video games! Growing up, my dad introduced me to video games, the first being Street Fighter. I have always been surrounded by them growing up and even now. They really impacted my life allowing me to share this commonality with my friends and new ones. I play a wide array of games, mostly PC, but sometimes PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Some of my favorite games are Final Fantasy VII, League of Legends, Persona 5, and Stardew Valley. As of recent, I've been playing Fall Guys and Among Us as well!
