New game mode that cuts out permadeath also added to play
Barcelona, Spain – May 28, 2020 – Having launched the very first chapter back at Halloween last year, Raiser Games and Protocol Games are excited – and understandably a little bit emotional – to confirm that the final episode in the Song of Horror story will launch on Steam for PC at 6pm BST/7pm CET/1pm ET/10am PT today.
The concluding episode will mark the end of a development journey that started for Protocol Games back in 2014, with episode 5 connecting everything players have experienced within the story from the very first episode right up to the game’s final note.
The last chapter, dubbed The Horror and The Song, will serve as the player’s final opportunity to stop the cursed song from playing and bring an end to The Presence for the last time: Players will build a bridge into the past to change the dark future that awaits them, unraveling the origins of the eerie entity that refuses to let them go.
Raiser Games and Protocol Games can also announce they have added a brand new game mode to play that, for the first time, removes permadeath. A response to fan requests, the new mode – dubbed E.T.A. Hoffmann after the famous gothic author – will appear as a new difficulty option, with players able to choose another character or re-start from the last checkpoint when a character dies.
Taking out permadeath will allow players who have found play to this point too difficult to make it to the end with their favorite characters in one piece.
“Song of Horror was designed to be a challenging, scary experience with permadeath at its core – we wanted you to feel the true fear and pressure of losing a character forever, that every action you take has a meaningful impact, that mistakes have real consequences, but also, that these consequences promote changing characters and experiencing the game from different perspectives,” says studio co-founder Carlos Grupeli. “However, we understand that every player is different. Some of you wanted to enjoy the story and gameplay of Song of Horror without permadeath getting in your way. We recommend playing with permadeath for the first time, but, if the game was inaccessible to you due to this mechanic, we hope that the E.T.A Hoffmann difficulty will allow you to still enjoy it!”
Episode 5’s launch comes at a time when Song of Horror is currently amongst the best-rated horror games on Steam released in 2020, with more and more press and players alike recognizing Protocol Games’ debut as one of the genre’s best newcomers.
“For us at Raiser Games, Song of Horror stands as a story of how a couple of inspired young horror fans learned how to develop videogames just so they could create their vision: a game where horror is unpredictable, and surprises you every time you play,” says Pablo de la Nuez, Managing Director at Raiser Games. “They never stopped fighting during the game’s six years of development to overcome all the barriers, even when some of them would discourage even the most experienced of studios. They dedicated themselves completely to achieve their dream – a dream we are very proud to be part of.”
