The game, Soundfall, by Noodlecake Studios and Drastic Games, officially released on May 11, 2022 for PC and console. This game is a dungeon crawler that heavily relies on music to complete each level. I love dungeon crawlers, as well as rhythm games, so I thought this was very interesting to combine both genres into one game. While it took me a bit to get used to, I would say that I really enjoyed this game.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Soundfall can be simple, but it can also be challenging. For the most part, the game is pretty basic for a dungeon crawler. The player has to attack enemies and make it to the exit without dying. What makes this game unique from other dungeon crawlers is that the music plays a big part in completing the level. In order to do any action effectively (other than move), players have to do each action with the beat of the music (there is also a metronome in the hud that can help players if they are having trouble with staying with the beat of the music). These actions mainly include attacking and dodging. The player will have to keep with the beat of the music playing in the level to attack and dodge effectively. If players get off beat with the music, they will do a less effective attack or dodge. If players continue to be off beat with the music, the player will be unable to attack and dodge for a certain amount of time. This game helps to teach players the importance of the beat in music, which I believe is great for people studying music as a career. The music in the game will consist of both slower and faster paced music. When players decide to do free play, they can choose the music they will use and listen to in the level. There are also many different songs in the game for players to choose from. One of my favorite things about this game, however, is if players do not like the songs the game provides them with, they can choose to import songs they have on their pc into the game to play in the level. This can help make the game really fun by picking songs players already enjoy, (or if there are players like me, they will pick the hardest and fastest song they can think of, import it, and try to keep up the best they can). Overall, I think the gameplay for Soundfall is a very good play to mess around with.
Final thoughts
Overall, Soundfall is a fun dungeon crawler to mess around with. I believe this game is a fun game for people who enjoy dungeon crawlers as well as people who enjoy music and rhythm games. If you like both dungeon crawlers and rhythm games, then this is the game for you. If you want to buy this game, you can find it on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
