We had first seen State of Mind at E3 2018. Daedalic is always unpredictable for me, after playing the Deponia series, and Shadow Tactics, that was a strategic game. This time with State of Mind, third person, narrative driven game, the demo has been a great experience!
State of Mind takes place in a cyberpunk world where transhumanism is on the rise. And you can pretty much see the similar world as of Deus-Ex. The protagonist, Richard, wakes up from an accident and is trying to recover his memory regarding the accident. Daedalic has done a great job in keeping the suspense active throughout the game of what is going on in the story. Richard is a character who is really hard to understand, as he is journalist and his morals are against AI and transhumanism. Every time, it seems that we have revealed the suspense, something new comes up and that kept my interest through the gameplay of the demo.
Meanwhile in the story, there is another protagonist we play who lives a happy life with everything he could hope for. The character named Adam seems to be pretty much the exact opposite of the what Richard is. Daedalic has done an excellent job of balancing the story and not let players get confused, as we sure do have a lot of questions of what is happening, and the interesting thing is the life of Richard and Adam are going to be connected as we move on with the story.
Richard finds out a lot of things as he gets back home and starts investigating a lot of things going on in his life and turns out that his wife has left the house with his son and have gone missing. As Richard moves on investigating his wife’s disappearance, he finds out that Adam is a part of Richard’s consciousness uploaded in the virtual or we can say transhuman world. And everything happening in Adam’s world is connected to Richard in itself.
I am really looking forward to find out how these characters are going to be interacting in the full game and all the suspense building around the story itself. An excellent story driven original game from Daedalic, State of Mind is coming out on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on August 15th 2018.
