It’s been a solid minute since I got to review a game for Nintendo Switch. When given Super Mega Zero, I didn’t really know what to think. On the surface level, it seems like a basic 8-bit retro arcade game. In a lot of ways, perhaps it is, but it’s also one of the perfect companions you can get for a quick on-the-go gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch itself. Developed by Rogue Games, a company that’s only been around since 2017 and has pumped out over 20 video games to date! Granted, Super Mega Zero isn’t by all means the most technologically advanced game, especially in the graphics department, we are talking about 8-bit graphics here after all, but it does offer some clever ingenuity to classic arcade games you may have nostalgia for all those decades ago.
You play as a little pixelated white zero (0) and your love interest that seemingly looks just like you but with a pink bowtie on top (I wonder where I’ve seen that before) has been taken away by the evil “Kill Screen.” This is a very tight precision game with some elements of classic shoot’em ups from the 80’s era. Throughout levels, you collect upgrades such as a number one that turns you from a 0 to a 1, for just a moment to give you one extra jump to accomplish a stage. The complexity and ingenuity in some of these stages can get very bonkers to an impressive degree to, yes, it can be very challenging. With enough trial and error though, I’m confident gamers will succeed and feel very accomplished upon completing a difficult level.
I also want to give a shoutout to the music in this game. The chiptune soundtrack is in a word, AMAZING! It never gets old and feels modern, but of course, retro. If you’re a fan of that genre of music, this is absolutely one to check out. To be honest, there isn’t a whole lot more I want to say about this game. There are well over a hundred levels to play, all really fun. There’s also collectable “Pi’s” to find on your journey to get your highest score. At the end of the day, this is a simple game, not many layers to it, everything you see is at face value. That doesn’t stop it from being very fun and addicting. As previously stated, these are the kinds of games I love to see on the Nintendo Switch, because I tend to be a gamer that likes to keep his console docked and play on the TV. But with Super Mega Zero, it really called me to play it the other way, on-the-go. At the very least I still played it in my bedroom but it wasn’t docked! (LOL).
While the price of the game is $9.99, there seems to be a promotion to get it for 50% off before it’s even released at $4.99. For me, I think that’s a steal of a price, for the amount of time I’m sure you would put into playing it. So go from Zero to Hero and give this one a shot!
8/10

Gaming since I was given an original Nintendo as a kid. I love great storytelling and unique ingenuity. When both collide in a single game, I'm a happy gamer. Twitter/IG @NickNavarro87
