Although we will not admit it, it is many people’s deep desire to be able to dive into a television show or movie world they grew to love on a deeper level – to be able to move around freely in the world themselves, and experience the adventures first-hand. This desire does not come to fruition very often, save for the ultra-popular franchises such as Star Wars or Harry Potter.
Now, however, fans of The Dark Crystal, a Netflix Original, can also enjoy such an experience. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics releases today, February 4th, on the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, as well as PCs and Macs.
In The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, Thra is recreated. From the start, a mysterious circumstance is rippling across the world the Gelflings find themselves in… a malicious “darkening.” After witnessing first-hand a tragic loss, it is the playe’rs job to inform the rest of the Gelflings what is occurring, and fight the evil Skeksis who threaten Gelfling existence.
Throughout The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, players will go through a series of missions that have appeared in the show on Netflix, as well as become the spectators to knew lore that widens the world of Thra.
This video-game version of The Dark Crystal combines the classic turn-based combat style with many narrative cut scenes. The combat in particular is lively: the 3D environments are intricate and diverse, allowing players to choose a tactical option they feel a greater affinity. As the campaign progresses, more and more characters joint the party, adding in a level of characterization and individuality to missions. The speed of victory can be greatly altered depending on who is included on certain missions.
As players advance through The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, characters level up, and many different customizable options are unlocked. These options include assigning jobs, changing abilities, and carrying equipment.
A result of this extreme customization is enormous replay ability of missions and the game as a whole, as you can essentially play the game again with entirely different sets of characters and different types of party members. The levels of complexity are furthermore simply admirable, as they allow the player to feel as though they truly are in the world of The Dark Crystal instead of a superficial replication of Thra.
As someone who hasn’t watched the TV show on Netflix or otherwise but did to research on this universe, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics appears as though it certainly does the show justice. For fans of The Dark Crystal or even fans of games such as Fire Emblem, this game will deliver and please.
END SCORE: 9/10

Nintendo Switch Review
I'm Zepora, a junior at UC Berkeley studying Economics. I grew up attached to my Game Boy playing the Pokémon games, but now I turn to my consoles as break from school work when I'm not busy with lacrosse. I prefer RPG's with a some action, such as Elder Scrolls and Assassin's Creed (which is my favorite franchise) but am also known to play Super Smash Bros until 3am with my friends.
