The Elder Scrolls: Blades is the newest game in The Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda. This addition is currently early access and is only available on mobile. You don’t have to be familiar with The Elder Scrolls series to play The Elder Scrolls: Blades. I personally went into this game blind and enjoyed it nonetheless. All you really need to know is that it is a first-person RPG that includes combat, crafting, and questing. It is a dungeon crawler reinvented.
My first concern going into this game was that it was a mobile RPG. There has been a rise in big game companies making mobile games and I know a lot of gamers are not happy about this. I myself was skeptical going in but I actually found it quite entertaining. It is a little difficult to move your character and the camera but not so much that the game isn’t playable. I quickly got the hang of it and it became less distracting. I found being able to pull out my phone whenever I was bored and having an RPG at my fingertips very exciting. A lot of the time I have to make time out of my day to sit at my computer or in front of my TV to be able to play games like this. Having it as a mobile game meant that I could play more often and without the worry of saving or losing progress.
Another concern I had was if it was a pay-to-play game. I have spoken about my opinion on pay to play games before and I can tell you it hasn’t changed. I don’t think it is fair or just to have to continuously spend money on a game just to be able to play. Thankfully, The Elder Scrolls: Blades is not like this. Yes, there are in-game purchases but you do not need to make these purchases to level up or complete quests. You can play the game without the need of buying any extra gems or supplies. Though if you wish to advance more quickly and not wait on certain aspects, you are able to make purchases if you like.
When it came to the art and sound of this game, I was actually very impressed. You guys may know that I love talking about the art and sound in games and a lot of the time, mobile games just aren’t as pretty and well polished as console or computer games. The Elder Scrolls: Blades had very impressive graphics. The characters are very well done, the backgrounds are very well done, and overall I really enjoyed the art style. One thing that I really enjoyed was how customizable the character is. You have tons of choices when it comes to creating your Blade which I don’t find in mobile games very often. There were times when things got a little laggy but that is expected with early access games. I also had to turn up my brightness a lot of the time in the Abyss and other dungeons. So if you can’t see what you are doing, I suggest trying that. The sound in this game is great too. The music is very atmospheric and the battle sounds are well done.
I really like RPGs and dungeon crawlers so I really enjoyed The Elder Scrolls: Blades. It is really cool to have it on my phone to play whenever I want. It may not be for everyone and it definitely won’t replace the RPGs I play on my computer, but it is very fun to have on the go.
