New York, NY – The Greatest Video Game Music: Choral Edition, the third in the best-selling series from U5 (a joint venture between X5 Music Group and Universal Music Group), boldly re-imagines the scores of massively popular video games including Final Fantasy X, Minecraft, Skyrim and World of Warcraft, and will be released on January 29 both digitally and on CD.
This recording is the biggest ever choir arrangement featuring video game music. Recorded out of a European medieval church with the famed Oprhei Drangar, a renown 80-piece Swedish choir founded in 1853, and Myrra Malmberg, the American-Swedish, classical-crossover singer who has appeared in West End productions of Les Miserables, Great Expectations and Phantom of the Opera, this marriage between the Video Game and choral worlds was orchestrated and produced by Swedish Grammy Award winner Peter Nordahl.
Final Fantasy X’s “Hymn of the Fayth” serves as a leitmotif throughout The Greatest Video Game Music: Choral Edition. The piece, written by Japanese composers Nobuo Uematsu and Masashi Hamauzu, opens the album then reappears twice as remixes, tying together works adapted from popular games including The Last of Us, Portal 2, God of War III, Assassin’s Creed IV and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Taken together, the music, explores themes of dark versus light in video-game music.
The Greatest Video Game Music series have tapped into a continually growing audience for the music of the world’s largest entertainment medium, “an industry whose franchises rival Hollywood’s,” according to the Los Angeles Times, and has sold nearly 300,000 copies. The series’ first two volumes featured pieces recorded by The London Philharmonic Orchestra.
U5 is a X5 Music’s Group global partnership with Universal Music Group, created to produce digital compilation albums from the music and artists of Universal’s Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Verve and Blue Note Records labels.
