According to financial data, 2020 was a wonderful year for gaming. With the industry as a whole earning a staggering US$139.9 billion and weighted aggregate growth of around 12%, the one-two punch of heavyweight releases finally hitting the market and COVID-19 induced lockdown meant that some of the year’s highest-earning video games racked up some impressive numbers.

Surprisingly, given the higher active user population, free-to-lay games outpaced premium titles by a significant margin. In comparison, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the highest-earning premium game, earning US$1.91 billion, while Pokemon Go was the fifth-highest-earning free-to-play game.

Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2

Modern Warfare 3 which was released in 2011 is perhaps most known for what happened behind the scenes to allow the game to be launched. But maybe the gossip and war in the industry is not too interesting for us. What is interesting is that Modern Warfare 3 received positive reviews from both critics and fans, and went on to sell millions of copies. The game is famous for its gripping campaign, which followed the legendary Modern Warfare story of Task Force 141 troops, as well as its Horde-style Survival mode.

One year later Black Ops 2 was released and it was yet another successful and adored game in the iconic Black Ops sub-brand. On the story front, one of its greatest and most intriguing novelties was its storyline, which jumped between the 1980s and the future in 2025. The way the two components linked and weaved together was unique at the time, and it resulted in some memorable scenes. The campaign was also notable for giving players even more power over the plot by enabling them to make decisions in critical moments involving people who live or die, which might have long-term consequences.

Call Of Duty: WWII and Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: WWII from 2017 was Sledgehammer’s first return to WWII in many years. There were no more superpowers, no more wall-running, and no more drones. This was a return to the fundamentals. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Infinity Ward’s 2007 shooter is the winner of all the Call Of Duty’s. Despite being quite outdated the game made it possible to relocate the franchise from World War II to a current setting to present a thrilling, globe-trotting tale with numerous twists and turns as players faced a terrorist threat on a worldwide scale. The game was lauded for its spectacular, Hollywood-style campaign mode, as well as its calmer moments—the All Ghillied Up sniper scenario remains emblematic for the franchise.

The game’s biggest effect, though, came from its multiplayer mode.
