The Inner Friend is a new puzzle-horror game developed and published by PLAYMIND. The Inner Friend is not like other horror games such as Outlast or Resident Evil, but is rather based on dark, scary, and mysterious representation of memories and fears in a person’s life.
Overall, The Inner Friend’s gameplay time is much shorter than an average game, but it utilizes that much span of time with some amazing representation of childhood fears and nightmares that kids have and over their lifetime might have forgotten about those nightmares. It was sweet and scary reminder of the memories of the past that includes some levels like the school classroom and hair salon when the barber is trying to cut hair.
The level starts off with the player represented as a broken mannequin in a bedroom with just a bed initially and a crack through the walls, which the player must enter through. The Inner Friend does not have any specific tutorials other than the initial controls about movement, jump, and action buttons. Once the player enters the dream/nightmare world, there are no directions provided but to follow the clues of what to do next.
The Inner Friend is not just a horror but a puzzle game as well. The first school level provides with a bit of puzzle to solve to block the laser rays using books, which you move from one bench to the other and then create a path forward. Each level has different themes. Personally, I felt the hair salon level was scary and had my heart was pumping super-fast.
The Inner Friend has smooth controls and graphics are normal, not too high end but decent enough for the game and proves its purpose well. Each level also has some amazing collectibles to retrieve and put it back in the upgraded bedroom after the end of each level.
Overall, The Inner Friend has a short run, and provides a childhood glimpse in a scary way. The game provides a great gameplay in that amount of time. I would rate The Inner Friend 8 stars out of 10.
