Imagine, for just a moment, that you’re tiny. You also live on an extraordinarily tiny world. It’s so fragile in space, that even a collision with a soccer ball would cause your planet to dissolve into dozens of puzzle pieces, leaving your world a mess of colors and objects.
That is the premise of The Tiny Bang Story by developer Colibri Games and publisher, Ellada Games.
After the Tiny Bang world falls apart, it is up to you, the player, to fix the world’s disarray. By going through a series of five levels, you collect puzzle pieces in different areas of the planet and complete mind games, solve puzzles, and overcome tricks to advance your initiative to fix the world. If only it were that simple in real life!
To begin with, you get a little help in The Tiny Bang Story to help understand what your goals are. This comes in the form of pointing, and not much else. By pounding on my screen incessantly, I finally figured out exactly what I (sort of) had to do. Hidden puzzle pieces on the screen revealed themselves, with a countdown number.
However, with the repeated pressing on random objects, sometimes another objective would appear on the right side of my screen. These are objects that help fulfill mini objectives in order to progress from level to level. Finding these objects is no easy task; below you can me failing to find a dial. I required help from the fly that whirs around the screen nonstop, which only offers such help if you tap on it enough to earn the hint assistance. Otherwise, they just fly around without purpose.
The mini games are a hit or miss – a submarine game was entertaining, but a number to shape matching game was just too simple.
All the games are quite simple and easy, mostly taking patience over skill or intellect. The Tiny Bang Story seemed to be more of a relaxing, slow game meant for a lazy day in the summer if one does not have much else to do.
The interface on the Nintendo Switch was not one I enjoyed. The curser moved too slowly when in its normal speed, and there was only one other alternate speed, which was much too fast. You could use the touch screen, but The Tiny Bang Story requires such a precise selection of the items you are interacting with, I found it not to work very well. The old-fashioned mouse and computer style is much more superior for a game such as The Tiny Bang Story.
The soundtrack is great: upbeat yet not distracting, and it keeps you focused. The artwork is amazing as well. There is a lot of detail and work that was put into The Tiny Bang Story to make it more than just a basic puzzle game.
Basic but entertaining, The Tiny Bang Story is an okay game, with some qualities that do garner applause. But its simplicity and at times obscureness in its scavenger hunt puts me off.
If you’re looking for a storyline, or characters to fall in love with, then The Tiny Bang Story is surely not for you. However, if you want to puzzle out a game in five short levels, then look to The Tiny Bang Story.
End score: 5/10

Nintendo Switch Review
I'm Zepora, a junior at UC Berkeley studying Economics. I grew up attached to my Game Boy playing the Pokémon games, but now I turn to my consoles as break from school work when I'm not busy with lacrosse. I prefer RPG's with a some action, such as Elder Scrolls and Assassin's Creed (which is my favorite franchise) but am also known to play Super Smash Bros until 3am with my friends.
