MMO’s have been on the rise for a while lately, as more and more people get converted to this fascinating and quite social type of gaming. It is one area we are definitely excited about to see how it evolves until the end of 2018 – and these are the top game developers we are keeping an eye on throughout the year.
Elder Game Studios
Elder Game Studios has had a great run during the first months of 2018. Although the studio originally intended to release its much-awaited new title Project: Gorgon in 2017, they had to postpone the date and wait until March 2018 due to some technical glitches. The result was worth the wait, according to enthusiastic fans: Project: Gorgon is a MMORPG that allows you to explore the world around you. Its creators adopted an approach that aims to make the game an “immersive experience”, where players are not guided through the map by specific tasks but are left free to make their own way and uncover its secrets. It also bases its leveling system on skills rather on default classes, which enables players to combine skills and make the game their own. Elder Game Studios is helmed by Eric Heimburg and Sandra Powers, partners in crime and in life, who have been behind other successful games such as Asheron’s Call 1, Star Trek Online, and EverQuest II.
Plarium
Plarium is one of those solid game developers who offer an impressive selection of MMO’s and you know you can always count on their brand. They focus on fantasy and history-inspired MMO’s, with a roster that ranges from Sparta: War of Empires and Stormfall: Age of War to Pirates: Tides of Fortune and Soldiers Inc. Their flagship MMO is probably Vikings: War of Clans, which just had a super boost in 2018. Plarium added new elements to the game that takes inspiration from Norse mythology, like increased capabilities and additional enemies for the Vikings the player guides through the wars they wage to take back the North. They have also launched Throne: Kingdom at War, which is another strategy MMO with a medieval theme. We can’t wait for their next move.
Bluehole
Headquartered in South Korea, the Bluehole Studio knows the gaming world like the palm of their hand. The developer made a bang at the end of 2017 when their PUBG Corporation subsidiary developed and launched PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the battle royale-style MMO that was widely acclaimed and loved by gamers. In 2018, they released the Android and iOS version and saw it evolve into a proper eSport. Before that, they were known and respected for TERA and Devilian. Their next move sounds even more exciting: they are currently developing Ascent: Infinite Realm, which has already created much curiosity among gamers. This steampunk meets fantasy MMO will take place in a world where magic and machines are at the core of everything. Abbreviated as A:IR, Bluehole’s latest creation will see players rely on anything that flies in order to explore its “highly vertical” world, where airships battle dragons.
With all these in store, it seems that 2018 has already proved an amazing year for MMO developers – and there is plenty more to come!
