Touhou: New World Review for Nintendo Switch

Introduction/Information about Touhou: New World

The game Touhou: New World is a game that was officially released on the Nintendo Switch on July 13, 2023. This game is a fan-made bullet hell hack and slash RPG based off of the game series Touhou where players will fight their way through enemies and bosses. I enjoy hack and slashes, bullet hells, and RPGs quite a lot, and while I do not care much for the Touhou universe, this game was fun for me to play. After playing this game, I would say this is a fun game for both fans of hack and slash RPGs, as well as fans of Touhou.

Gameplay

The gameplay for Touhou: New World has a simple combat system for the game that is very easy to pick up and understand. Players will start the game selecting which character they would like to play as. A shrine maiden named Reimu Hakurei or a magician named Marisa Kirisame. Once players choose which character they wish to play as, the game will dive right into the story they have to offer, as well as how to play the game. The game will start the player out having their basic attack and 3 hit combo. This is the main way to deal with enemies. With this melee attack, players will have to get up close and personal instead of shooting from afar. Of course, this is not the only way to fight back. While players have their basic attack, they also have different skills they can use, as well as a super. However, unlike the basic attack, these skills and super have to recharge after being used once. Players can equip 3 skills on their character. Many skills are unique in their own way. The 3 skills the game will start the player out with are a close-mid ranged melee attack, a long ranged shooting attack, and a unique shooting attack. As players progress through the game, they will gain more skills they can customize and use. Finally, the player will also have a super they can use that deals heavy damage to their enemies. I recommend using the super when the enemy is wide open or even stunned in some way to deal as much damage with it as possible. These are all the ways players can attack and defeat their enemies in the game. Of course, the enemies are not going to go down without fighting. This is where guarding comes into play. Players can guard enemy attacks, however this only applies to melee attacks. Enemies can also do long ranged attacks, which can only be dodged and not guarded. Finally, players can also heal themselves a small amount of their hp if needed. However, this also needs to recharge, so players cannot use this constantly to survive. Using all of these attacks and skills, players will be able to make their way through enemies and defeat bosses.

Final thoughts

Overall, I believe the game Touhou: New World is a fun bullet hell hack and slash RPG that also offers a very nice challenge to players. Like I said before, I do not care much for the Touhou series. However, I greatly enjoy hack and slashes, RPGs, and even bullet hell games. To see all of these genres mixed together into a game was very fun for me, even if it is part of a series I do not care much for. If you are a hack and slash fan, RPG fan, bullet hell fan, or even a Touhou fan, then I would highly recommend playing this game. Players can get this game on the Nintendo Switch as well as Steam and PS4/PS5.

Score: 7.5/10
