Tracks – The Train Set Game is a nostalgic wooden train set game straight out of your childhood. Whoop Group and Excalibur Games have taken us down memory lane with this early release world building construction game. Tracks – The Train Set Game was started February of 2017 for the AGDG’s Comfy Jam, the goal being to create a “comfy” game and I personally think Tracks – The Train Set Game hit the mark. After further development, Rock Paper Shotgun got a hold of the game and wrote an article you can check out here. In the same week Jacksepticeye, the previously green haired Irish Youtuber, posted a Tracks – The Train Set Game Let’s Play. This video was actually where I first heard of the game myself. With all this great publicity it’s no wonder that even though it is only an early release, it already has very positive reviews on Steam.
While this relaxing laid back game may not be the same as lying on the floor in your living room connecting the wooden tracks, but Whoop Group’s world takes away all the limitations of IRL track building. A limitless map keeps you from running out of room and free-mode allows you to build without any objectives. If you aren’t sure where to start you can load up some of the premade tracks to get some inspiration and then let your creativity flow. Have your tracks expand outward and build a world around them or build upward and create a ride fit for an amusement park! Once your masterpiece is finished you get to experience the most exciting part of this game! By pressing the T key you are transported to the controls of the miniature train! You now have the ability experience and control you trip around the tracks (not to mention there is a little train whistle feature that just made my day.) If you want to take your track building to the next level there are optional objections to help challenge you.
The music is wonderful and super calming. You can actually purchase the soundtrack as a DLC on Steam for $4.99. The art style is beautiful and really does look like real wood and authentic train sets. The graphics are still a little laggy, especially when you are going at high speeds around turns, but this is to be expected an early release game.
One of my only complaints is that there are so many controls that it is very hard to memorize them all and going to the controls menu anytime you need to do something is a little frustrating. I personally would prefer a selection bar rather than key controls.
Tracks – The Train Set Game has gone above and beyond just a “comfy” game and I can’t wait to see what else Whoop Group has in store for us. You are able to check this game out for yourself on Steam. Though it is not yet available for other software, consoles, or VR they are hoping one day it will be so if you can’t access it now, hopefully you will be able to soon.
