Tribes of Midgard, a game developed by Norsfell and published by Gearbox, brings truly a boatload of content to the game that is sure to please players of this game. The new season, Tribes of Midgard Season 2: Serpent Saga, was released on December 14th to correlate with the Holiday season through events, challenges, and a boss that is great in bringing some new fresh content to this good game. The first saga of this game, the seasons, was called Wolf Saga and this expands on that with being called the serpent sage which is well named for the new features added.
If you are a new player to Tribes of Midgard, the game revolves around dropping you into a procedurally generated world, which allows for a fresh adventure each time. From there you start with nothing but slowly start to build up the village and character to save the village and world. This can be a cooperative experience with up to 10 players that can help you take on the waves of enemies, Ragnarök, and save the village and protect the seed. When this seed, called Seed of Yggdrasil, is destroyed, then that session ends for you and others.
During the day, characters want to collect resources so that they can craft better equipment and resources to help bolster the village and the characters themselves. During the night is when the serious waves of enemies come to attack, from giants, dark elves, and beasts, to try and destroy the seed and take over this world and in turn end your game. You have to watch out for sage bosses and Jotnars, giants, that can truly decimate the seed and village. You will be able to play Saga Mode, which is based around completing quests to lead to a battle with a saga boss to kill. The Saga Mode is the main mode of the game that gives you an objective of killing the big bad saga boss, which is the end of the game. Then, with Survival Mode, this just focuses the player on surviving if they can against the waves of enemies and see how long they can survive, a much simpler mode that solely focuses on survival.
A huge aspect that this new season brings is the addition of boats in the world in the way of the Shipyard that can be found Beach Biome of the world. In this biome the player can rebuild the shipyard so that you can build some boats, the options are the Faring, Karve, and Drakkar. I enjoyed the Drakkar the biggest of the ships that truly brought me into the experience with the Viking influence throughout it. The way the ships can be positioned is with the sails that have the option to open or close. You can help position and control the speed of the boat that you are using. This was an intriguing and fun aspect to add to the game with how impactful ships are a part of Viking and Norse mythology. The open seas even add to the experience of discovering the world with camps and merchants that can be discovered with new resources and loot being available which is always great.
Another aspect that many fans were asking for is the addition of swimming in the game. In the first season, fans were frustrated with the water being an issue but now with swimming, this is not an issue anymore. This helps with travel immensely being able to just jump in the water to traverse easier. That is always a good addition when it makes traversal easier. Although do not be like me and forget about the stamina aspect of swimming because once you run out of stamina you will take damage. Even single-player players are helped a bit with this update where they are given a bit more protection with the village from the start to help them through the beginning. I think this is a great addition so that the game does not punish a single-player person too much because sometimes you just want to play by yourself. The new saga brings in a new saga boss to take on which is Jormungandr, who is known as the World Serpent. The developers truly embrace the Norse methodology aspect using Thor’s bait to summon him as he comes through a hole in the ground. This aspect that reveals Jormungandr was thrilling to experience. The boss was clever with lines and poison-based attacks that you had to watch out for on top of the tail that would come after you as well. I enjoyed the adventure of taking on Jormungadr and think he was a great addition as a saga boss for the season. Lastly, it was great to get in the holiday spirit with the Yule event which runs until January 3 where you will be able to add great holiday cosmetics and pets that add to the experience while playing which is always appreciated.
Delving into Tribes of Midgard Season 2: Serpent Saga I knew I was going into an experience I would enjoy being a Survival RPG game. However, the combination of the intriguing Norse mythology aspects, which I love, adds to the immersion. The fans of Norse Mythology will love that addition of the World Serpent, Jormungandr which will only bring you more into the experience. The addition of the boats, which adds a whole new element of sea travel, and swimming makes exploring so much more engaging and enjoyable. The content of added armors, weapons, and runes truly make the player want to find all these new impactful items to check out. They even attempted to fix the problem I had with the single-player experience which became difficult at times. To aid this there was the addition of added fortifications to help players out, but the game is not made to be played by a single person. I understand wanting to push for cooperative play and having the game truly lean on that but even more needs to be added to make the game a bit more manageable as a single-player experience. Overall, I feel the season 2 additions to Tribes of Midgard only improve the experience and add to an already strong game.
Score: 8/10

Gaming has always been an outlet for me to interact with different people and explore all kinds of possibilities. I play a wide variety of games always willing to try different mechanics and storylines that developers are trying to create for their games. I grew up delving into MW2 and World of Warcraft, I miss the Wrath of The Lich King days, and as I have gotten older I have found a love for RPGs and strategy games, my favorites being The Witcher 3 and Total War. Always looking forward to the next great game.
