UnderMine, an amazingly presented roguelike developed and published by Thorium, a team of a developer and a designer, has done a great job in bringing a roguelike dungeon crawler to life.
We have played a lot of roguelike in the past couple of years and each one brings the unique gameplay, which is true for UnderMine as well. UnderMine has a 2D gameplay with pixelated graphics that feels amazingly polished. Though UnderMine is not a next gen game, the gameplay does feel great with a few hiccups, which might not be a big trouble for a lot of players once you get the hang of it.
Here is a note from the developers about playing UnderMine on PS5 –
“To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent.”
UnderMine starts with player at a safe location that is a base where you get an entrance to the mine. You have to rescue a few peasants from the mine who are the NPCs that allow you to acquire/craft items from the currencies that you save. One of the currencies is gold and the other is gems that you get after exploring the dungeon/mine. You get a random map on the corner that shows you which dungeon rooms you have explored and which rooms have certain events or entrances to the next level of the mine.
The controls are very basic and include swinging and throwing your pickaxe as well as jumping to dodge an enemy attack. You get a lot of random items and challenges throughout each playthrough and UnderMine is special in providing something unique to the players. Either it’s a special NPC who allows you to get temporary power up like curses, blessings, or relics that are available for that single playthrough or you get different chests to get special items or keys to unlock some locked dungeon rooms. After a certain amount of exploration, as you move down you get main bosses, which have their own unique challenge.
After certain NPCs are saved, they are available to interact at the base after you die. One thing to note is that only gems are saved even after you die in the mines; only a certain amount of gold is secured after the death, so it is better to utilize the gold for getting permanent upgrades to the player.
So far, I personally have not felt anything repetitive as each run brings some unique experience. I had a great amount of fun playing through it, definitely a rogue-like worth trying out with a unique style of its own. Overall, I would rate UnderMine as 8-stars out of 10.
