UnMetal, by developer @unepic_fran and Publisher Versus Evil, is an upcoming 2D stealth action-adventure game that is a loving and quirky homage to the stealth classics of the past. Fans of the original Metal Gear games will find in UnMetal a game that not only pays respect to the past but also updates an aging genre with modern mechanics and jokes. UnMetal does a good job of balancing the light-hearted with the gameplay, delivering crisp, solid gameplay alongside hilarious cutscenes and quips from our not-quite Solid Snake, Jesse Fox.
No, it’s not a joke. It seems so obvious though, that the relatively silly premise of games like Metal Gear should have been parodied at some point. But parody does not mean good, necessarily. Is UnMetal good? Based on the limited demo available, yes, yes, it is. Guards are no joke and being spotted can result in fatal results. Inventory management and clever use of items are key to distracting guards, progressing story moments and staying alive. Based on what the devs promise, it seems like there is more to this game than just escaping prison for a crime you did not commit. Where UnMetal parodies traditional military and stealth games is in its story and dialogue. Jesse Fox’s dry wit is on full blast throughout the game and the cutscenes interspersed deliver some surprising laughs. I found myself having to collect myself after a cutscene for that reason. This game will surprise you, in a good way.
For those who are longing for the days of the early (and I mean super early) Metal Gear games and similar stealth games, UnMetal is a fun, charming and mechanically solid game to keep an eye out for. Don’t let the humor and dialogue fool you; this game will kick your butt just like how Jesse Fox can break a bathroom door down and kick a guard’s butt. Stealth is key and learning how to use your inventory will literally save your life more than once.
Is it for everyone? I don’t necessarily think so. Gameplay can be difficult and if you’re like me and prefer running in and shooting everything that has a pulse in other games, UnMetal can be UnForgiving (haha, see what I did there). But for fans of the genre, UnMetal is a funny, engaging and fun game to keep an eye on and pick up when it releases.

UnMetal aheads to all the major console stores this summer, and will also stealth onto Steam, GOG, Epic Game Store, Humble Store, Gamesplanet, VersusEvil.com and all other approved Versus Evil PC retailers.
My name is Matt Tran and I have been playing video games since I could remember holding a controller. I've always been a hardcore gamer growing up, from the hectic MW2 and Halo 3 lobbies, my many journeys through several Halo clans and my current exploits with my Destiny 2 clan. I love shooters and RPGs and overanalyzing every component of every game I've played, from weapon stats to ideal perks. When I have time to play other games, I currently play Genshin Impact and Star Wars Squadrons.
