Vectronom by developer Ludopium and publisher ARTE France is a geometric puzzle game that relies on music and rhythm as the solution. This colorful game was released late May 2019 and is available on Steam for Windows and Mac.
When I first looked into Vectronom, my first thought was that this game looks a lot like Geometry Dash by RobTop Games, and it is a bit like it. Both games use geometry and music heavily. However, Geometry Dash is a side scroller that moves your block for you. The goal of the game is to jump, in time to the music, to avoid obstacles. Vectronom seems to combine Geometry Dash with another game I remember from my childhood… Bloxorz on Coolmath Games. The goal of Bloxorz is to flip a rectangular prism across floating platforms and get it into a hole at the end of the puzzle. Vectronom is the perfect blending of these two games and it is quite fascinating to me to see this since I have played both of those games quite a bit. I would have never guessed that two of the most rage inducing games of my childhood/teenage years would be combined into one infuriating game.
That’s right, Vectronom is definitely a rage quit game, at least for me. It’s not unfair but one misstep and you have to start over. Also, in Geometry Dash, there was only one main beat in the music to follow, which could be tricky in itself, but Vectronom seems to have multiple beats that different parts of the puzzles follow. This adds another layer to the puzzle entirely. Now you have to dissect the music, figure out which beat the section you are trying to pass follows, then find and use the rhythm to complete only a small section before having to repeat with the next. Let’s not forget that there are constantly changing colors and shapes on screen to add another layer of distraction.
The game play is simple but requires more of you than Geometry Dash and Bloxorz do. You use WASD keys, no mouse required so nothing too crazy. There are a lot more obstacles and mechanics as well.
That being said, I enjoyed the arcade-esque aesthetic that Vectronom is going for but I do feel that the game is a little too trippy for my taste. I enjoy how Geometry Dash is more atmospheric and gets you pumped. Vectronom seems to be more anxiety inducing than adrenaline pumping, if that makes sense. I personally only think I could play for short sessions because of the art style alone not even taking into consideration the rage inducing aspect. The music is great which is really important for music heavy games. It is a little loud and headphones are suggested for the best experience so I suggest turning down your volume before plugging in.
Vectronom is an challenging but entertaining rhythm based puzzle game that fans of Geometry Dash will surely love. I’m sure I’ll be revisiting this colorful game when I feel like a brain teaser.
7/10
