Introduction/Information about Wanted: Dead
The game Wanted: Dead is a game that was officially released on PC and consoles, as well as Playstation 5, on February 14, 2023. This game is a hybrid slasher/shooter game developed by the creators of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive where players will follow the story of the Zombie unite, a police squad that are on a mission to uncover a corporate conspiracy. When I looked into this game, the concept they proposed of a hybrid slasher/shooter sounded like it could be very fun. After playing this game, I would say the mechanics and gameplay were not greatly executed, but executed well enough where some people can still have fun.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Wanted: Dead has a combat system relative to help match the slasher/shooter hybrid. Players will start the game out with two weapons. A sword and a gun. This will allow players to be able to switch from close sword slasher combat to long gun-ranged shooting combat, both easy to switch between on the fly. The gun can also be customized with different stats. This will help players make themselves the perfect gun they need for each situation. When players start the game, they will be presented with a tutorial on how to play. They can use melee attacks that can be combined with a handgun to do better combos. I found the melee to be the easiest way of attacking and defeating my enemies. The Player’s next option for defeating enemies would be shooting. These controls are pretty self explanatory, aim and shoot with the two trigger buttons. I was not very good with shooting my enemies, but I am not very good at shooting games in general. From what I saw, I can tell recoil seems very important when players customize their guns. Next, players will be able to dodge enemy attacks, as well as sprint and vault over different objects. This can make approaching enemies much easier since most of them try to stay away from you. Finally, there is the guard and parry mechanics when players use melee. They can guard enemy attacks with their sword or they can press the guard button at just the right time to parry the enemy, leaving them staggered to do a finisher. These are all of the basics of the game. With them, players will be able to slash and shoot their way through enemies.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe the game Wanted: Dead was not greatly executed. I believe the concept the developers thought of with having a slasher/shooter hybrid game is amazing. However, my issue with the game is that the game’s mechanics did not seem very well made and executed. I believe that if the game had more time to be made, then maybe the mechanics would feel and be much better. Of course, this game can still be fun for some, so if you are the kind of player that seems interested in a slasher/shooter hybrid with an interesting story, then I would recommend you try out this game. Players can get this game on PS5/PS4 as well as Steam and Xbox Series X/Xbox One.
