There are some games that are basic, mindless, and yet a whole lot of fun. However, you won’t find any of those games on this list. Here, we’re running through some of the most difficult games to master. This, of course, is part of why they’re so enjoyable. Whilst many of the games mentioned on this list are fun from the beginning, it takes a lifetime of learning to understand them on the deepest level. If you’re curious about challenging yourself, then give one of the following games a try!
Blackjack
Part of the fun of playing blackjack is that anyone can play since it’s one of the simplest casino games to understand. Indeed, even people who have only played a couple of times before can step into the virtual world of a live casino blackjack game and pick up a victory or two. However, while blackjack is accessible, it’s still challenging to master. There are a few basic strategies that will help, but if you want to dive into the mechanics of the game then you’ll need a pretty advanced mathematical education. The good news is that, at a certain level, maths proficiency is largely academic; even people who shied away from maths at school can understand the basics of the game.
Chess
Chess is around 1500 years old, and it’s little wonder that it has stood the test of time. It’s a game that continues to endure because of its sheer difficulty. While it’s relatively easy to pick up the basics (such as which pieces do what), it’s less easy to actually win a game. The world’s best players are called ‘Grandmasters,’ which should probably tell you everything you need to know about how difficult it is! It’s a game that requires players to think multiple moves down the line. Not easy, by any stretch.
Scrabble
Scrabble seems like a game that’s been around since forever but, actually, it’s less than one hundred years old. It’ll be around for a long time, however, because of how complicated it is. Contrary to popular belief, the best Scrabble players are not writers. The best players are mathematicians because, apparently, Scrabble requires a lot of theory once you get to the top level. Most people don’t reach that level, however. They remain at the ‘this is really annoying, and I now hate my friends’ level, which is equally valid.
Mushihimesama
Moving into the video game realm, one of the most difficult arcade 2D games – actually, one of the most difficult graphic games – has to be Mushihimesama. Even though all the graphics and gameplay are basic as anything, it still remains oddly terrifying, just because of the sheer barrage of bullets that come your way.
Trials Fusion
Trials Fusion is a game that seems pleasant and enjoyable until suddenly, everything shifts, and you realise that this isn’t fun at all. It’s brutal. It looks like a driving game, but it isn’t. Rather, it’s a puzzle game. By the time you’ve figured that out, you’re already far too deep, and all you can do is try to climb out of one hole and attempt to succeed, which is something that seldom few people manage to achieve.
Flywrench
If you happen to like games where you constantly die and struggle to make an inch of progress for the first several hours of playing, then maybe you’d enjoy Flywrench. It looks simple but, as you soon come to learn, it is anything but. It’s actually pretty impressive how the developers managed to take a simple concept and produce a game that makes you want to unplug your PC and never play the game – or any game – ever again. Kudos.
