Whirlight – No Time To Trip demo by Imaginarylab is a puzzle-based game set on a 2d plane with the game being driven by the narrative. The overall feel of the game from a gameplay perspective it is reminiscent of those old point and click adventure puzzle games that dominated the early video game industry for PC. Furthermore, the narrative for this game is centered on the main character Hector May as they go about their life after having a strange dream centered around a butterfly. As for how the game looks, it looks beautiful as the level of environmental detail is quite stunning for a puzzle game. Imaginarylab should be happy, as the demo for Whirlight – No Time To Trip is fun and an easy going game that people can just pick up and play.
Gameplay wise the game is a point and click adventure with a focus on puzzle solving. This focus on puzzle solving is heavily ingrained in the game and it is such a nice change of pace from all the current action-oriented games that have been released recently. So, this game offers a nice break from all the high stakes action players might have gotten used to. Moreover, this is emphasized in the gameplay allowing players to explore the area and interact with the environment to some extent. By allowing player to interact with the environment allows for them to explore the world and gain some context clues to possible answers or puzzles they might need to resolve. As for the difficulty of these puzzles it will require some critical thinking especially for how these puzzles are a bit abstract in certain spots of the game. Furthermore, some of these puzzles require the player to think outside the box at times and it culminates into allowing players to combine items that they have picked up in order to solve them. This allows for more creative solutions to occur when making puzzles and provides that much needed rush when players do find that eureka moment. Also, the gameplay and story are intertwined as both are needed for point and click puzzles as it spawns from the territory.
The narrative of the game is tied directly to the gameplay and they go hand in hand for point and click adventure games. Without going too far into spoilers the game follows Hector May a brilliant inventor who is stuck in a creative block and needs some new inspiration. In the opening scene he enters his dream to find the inspirations he needs in order to continue his career. It is from his desire to invent that allows the story narratively speaking to progress and with his demeanor it can possibly end up in some wild antics of which will allow him to do what he does best, invent. As for how the narrative keeps the players attention aside from the gameplay is the stellar art used in the game with wonderful rendered set pieces that bring back a little nostalgia.
As for how the game looks it is quite appealing showing off some well rendered backdrops that really showcase the team’s artistic passion, and graphical prowess for making the game look as good as it can be. The shading especially in certain parts look visually appealing that would make for some great desktop backgrounds or screen savers. This is especially true in one of the in game cutscenes that really showcases how impressive the game really is from an artistic standpoint, while also demonstrating what the player needs to do in order to progress.
Moreover, the art style chosen for the game feels vaguely familiar to the cover art in some of the I Spy series of games for the PC. Whether this was intentional or not, the art direction really invokes some nostalgia for older gamers who have played those games in the past. This can be seen easily if the player focuses solely on certain items in the foreground and background that allows for the connection to be made. Furthermore, this can be especially seen in a few of the items that can be picked up across the game.
Overall, Whirlight – No Time To Trip is going to be a fun game. The game is perfect for a laid-back gaming session as there is nothing to strenuous occurring as it’s a point and click puzzle game. Moreover, the narrative of the game supports the laid-back nature of the game as its not too serious and mostly focus on being a fun game. This is then complimented by the fantastic models and art in game that really highlights the wholesomeness the game is trying to convey. Whirlight – No Time To Trip demo is a solid preview for what the game is going to become.
