Wolfstride is a fun action packed role-playing game, by developer OTA IMON Studios and publisher Raw Fury, that ties in its fair share of humor as well. You follow a trio of troublemakers and ex-partners in crime, Knife Leopard, Duque, and Dominique Shade. They find themselves with an odd mech suit like no other named Cowboy, after some debate Knife Leopard is insistent on keeping the mech to use in fights, while Duque just wants to sell it, after arguing they end up keeping the robot. Now it’s your job to follow their story and help them rise in the ranks of mech fighting for a chance at some big money, but there is a bit more to uncover about the characters along the way.
When you first start Wolfstride, you are greeted with an intro that tells you a bit about the world that you now find yourself in. You are then introduced to the trio while being taught how the fighting system works. Knife Leopard is the pilot of the mech and you play as him while fighting, choosing where to move and what attacks you wish to make. Attacking and defending takes AP points of which you start with two, while moving takes up MP which you also have two of, after being taught the fighting mechanics you end up winning due to an ‘accident’ caused by another team trying to sabotage your suit, which ironically ends up making you win. Knife Leopard is taken to the hospital and you start to play as Shade, going around the city to get money and talk to people. There is a lot of stuff to do in the game, from meeting new people to doing odd jobs around the city for money.
You establish connections, gain allies that help you, as well as make enemies and rivals. All the while training and fighting in a unique mech suit with the goal of rising to the top. It is very apparent that a lot of time and love was put into the game and it has a good mix of action, humor, and story. Plus once you get into the story you start to uncover little secrets of the past, the lives these characters had before all this, and how it still has a way of haunting them. The voice acting in the game is top-notch with every character having a unique personality and style. The style of the game is 2D and mostly black and white, the artwork itself is a comic book anime style and everything flows nicely. I especially love the characters and the amazing comedic value some of the interactions have.
There isn’t really much I have found problematic in the game even when playing it before its release. The only thing I could even comment on is the slower pace, especially at the start, it’s a lot of listening to the talking and watching the scenes play out. After the first fight it takes a little while before you fight with the mech suit again and even after that is when you start to see a bit more of the past that some of the characters seem to be having trouble moving on from. But even the pacing, while it can be a bit of a drag, seems to be a part of the style and doesn’t put much of a strain on the gameplay.
Wolfstride is an in depth and comedic game about a trio of ex-partners in crime who find themselves having to work together once again as they climb the ranks of mech fighting. The game features many great aspects, from the unique characters, to the exploration of Rain City and the story you uncover along the way. While it is a bit of a slow burning adventure that can be a bit of a drag at times there is a lot to discover along the way. I am giving Wolfstride a solid 10 out of 10 as it is a very fun and well thought out game that I did not find many issues or problems with.
Wolfstride releases today for PC via Steam.
I enjoy a wide variety of games from intricate survival/adventure games to simple platformers. I am also a sucker for a good story game.
