This is Gaming Cypher’s preview done by Trevor Provencio of Worms W.M.D by award-winning veteran games developer and international games label Team17.
Worms W.M.D is a unique platformer type game with a lot of different applications and abilities. The types of items you can use to help you through this platformer are nearly endless. The game utilizes items like a grappling hook, a parachute, and a fiery punch. Your worm can use tons of items to help him through the levels which adds to the replay value of this game. I had never played a Worms game before and surprisingly a worm makes for one of the best protagonists. It is fun and inspiring to see one of the lowest and weakest animals on the planet flying all over your screen using grappling hooks and all sorts of gadgets to traverse through the levels.
The game engine is a little slower than a classic Mario game or Shovel Knight but that is because you are playing as a worm. I assume you can speed it up if you get certain items later in the game. There is so much room for this game to improve on its environments from the classic grassy background to all different kinds of backgrounds. It could give it a more exciting feel. There could also be different kinds of worms later in the game with different kinds of abilities.
The potential of Worms W.M.D is that it not being defined in one category. It has elements of a classic platformer with substantially more items than a normal platformer. It almost has as much items as a JRPG. The game escalates and escalates to an all-out war with worms controlling the tanks, helicopters, and bazookas. The 2D graphics of the game makes it very unique which gives it an older feel but with updated gameplay and graphics. Overall I would give this game an 8 out of 10 because it has so much potential. It is not 100% finished yet but it could be a very addicting game for many people to play.
You can pre-order Worms W.M.D now from the Xbox Games Store, the PlayStation Store, Steam and GOG.
