Microsoft announced the new Xbox Adaptive Controller, an Xbox One / Windows 10 PC controller designed for people with physical disabilities, developed in partnership with organizations around the world, including our client The AbleGamers Foundation.
As a leading organization using video games and interactive storytelling to empower those with disabilities – so everyone can game – AbleGamers is extremely proud to be a part of the process yielding this revolutionary new controller that makes it possible for many with severe muscular or physical disabilities to play video games again – or for some the very first time!
Standard gaming controllers can be a challenge to use — specifically for those with disabilities. Being able to reach the bumpers and triggers or hold a controller for an extended period of time can be difficult, or even impossible, for gamers with limited mobility. While there are third-party solutions currently available that are designed to fit these needs, they are not widely used because they are expensive and difficult to obtain.
To address these challenges and allow more fans to enjoy gaming, the Xbox Adaptive Controller was created by the Xbox Accessibility team with the help of The AbleGamers Foundation, nonprofit organizations, hospitals and the feedback of real players with disabilities in the gaming community. Its simple design features a rectangular frame and two large programmable buttons with light resistance that can even be manipulated with feet and toes. With support for a wide range of additional external inputs, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is also customizable by allowing users to plug in additional switches from third party manufacturers. This unique new controller gives gamers the freedom to create a setup that works for them and their highly individualized needs. The Xbox Adaptive Controller will retail for $99.99 USD when it launches later this year.
