Developer Jumpdrive Studios has released a new trailer today for their upcoming strategy game, XO. The video features in-game footage, and music by Jim Guthrie (Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Indie Game: The Move, Below) who recently joined the team to create an original soundtrack for XO.
You are the captain of the last remaining battleship in the fleet. A relentless, overwhelming enemy has emerged to abduct your people. There’s no time to colonize planets, negotiate with alien races, or build an empire. You’re outnumbered, out-gunned, and low on resources. Knowing when it’s time to fight or flee will be the key to saving the human race.
Inspired by sci-fi works such as Battlestar Galactica , the Lost Fleet series, and games like FTL , this strategy game will test your skills as a leader in times of great need.
“We’ve received a tremendous amount of support from the indie community so far,” said Corey Warning of Jumpdrive Studios. “I think we initially struck a chord with the game’s visual style, and once we started diving into the political system, people started to get really excited.” In April, XO successfully completed the feedback phase with Square Enix Collective , and will now receive their support during their upcoming Kickstarter campaign – starting July 20th, 2015. Since then, the team has continued to build an audience by updating their blog weekly with posts on XO’s development, deep dives into the game’s features, and post-mortems from their experiences showcasing the project at gaming event.
Jumpdrive Studios is a small, dedicated team of game developers from various backgrounds. They operate out of a tiny office in SE Portland… a room that is frequently mistaken for a utility closet. Square Enix Collective is a platform that aims to help independent developers find an audience for their projects, by enabling them to tap into our community and media resources. Projects which gamers support through the initial Feedback phase may be offered continued support through crowdfunding too; but developers are free to choose whether to accept, and always retain IP and complete creative control over their projects.
Gameplay
XO is a single player game. Newtonian physics govern starship movement in a 2D plane. The game unfolds in real-time but you can pause the action and issue commands. Most of the gameplay is procedurally generated, including events, weapons, star systems, and personalities. These rogue-like elements ensure XO will be replayable and unique during each session.
