While playing the Ghostrunner Demo, developed by One More Level, 3D Realms, and Slipgate Ironworks, and published by All in! Games, my expectations were unquestionably exceeded. This lightning fast FPP slasher is set in a grim cyberpunk world with futuristic structures that you climb to reach each objective. My first impression of this game was “WOW!” I didn’t really know what I was walking into when I started playing this demo, but I was pleasantly surprised by every element of the outcome. Even before the player is brought to the start menu, an action-packed aerial scene is played for the game, with graphics so realistic I felt as if I were front and center in the scene myself.
When Ghostrunner starts, a voice called “The Whisper” starts whispering dialogue to the player as narration. It was kind of creepy to be honest, but it certainly added to the aesthetics and overall cyberpunk feel of the game. It felt pretty eerie the whole time I was playing, and I never knew if something or someone was hiding around the corner or if it was my own shadow. Since this was just a demo and not the full game, it was obviously a lot shorter and without as many obstacles to get through, but I still think it gives the player a good sense of what the overall gameplay will be like. It is pretty challenging at times to understand the objective of each checkpoint, and I found myself getting a bit frustrated before I figured out how to complete it. I had to keep restarting objectives because I kept dying (I’d prefer to not say how many times), but it gave me more incentive to keep trying to complete that objective and move to the next ones.
Some of the boundaries I had to blindly walk into and die before I realized that it was just a death trap that didn’t lead into the next area. Once I got the hang of it though, it was fun. There weren’t as many enemies to kill as I thought there would be, but I’m assuming more of them were added to the full game. Ghostrunner is challenging and requires a fair bit of patience, but if you’re willing to stick it out and figure out the objectives, it is undeniably worth it. Plus, you get to kill enemies with a sword, scale walls, and fight like a cyber-ninja, which is pretty awesome. I don’t really play that many first-person perspectives or first-person shooter games so these controls and actions in the game will probably be decidedly easier for players who are used to this kind of gameplay. I would highly recommend playing the full version of Ghostrunner.

I have always looked to gaming as an outlet outside of my everyday life and a way to experiment with playing different types of games and take on new and exciting characters with different backgrounds. It's kind of like getting to become a new person every time you play a game.
