Remnant: From the Ashes Swamps of Corsus DLC Review for Steam

Remnant: From the Ashes Review for Steam

I have not once in my life played one of the Dark Souls games, as cool as they look, so jumping into the similarly styled Remnant: From the Ashes was a unique and new experience for me. Gunfire Games is an excellent developer, and I could see their handiwork present from their similar post-apocalyptic, Darksiders series (a great action RPG series to check out as well!). Filled with great gunplay, fun co-op, and some great fantastical elements, read on to see if you too would like to rise from the ashes!

Remnant’s story is nothing you would not know from your classic Greek tragedies. A hero is selected as the chosen one to fight against a nefarious enemy, and ends up washed ashore after a tidal wave knocks him out as if they were auditioning for a new version of The Poseidon Adventure. From seeking a lighthouse to exploring a facility of warehouses, you begin to fight these tree-like monster known only as the Root before getting knocked out in a last stand with your back against the wall. Rescued by those who live there, you quickly discover the severity of the world that these intruders have left humanity in, and how you (and up to two friends of course!) may be the only ones who can save it.

That being said, abandoned cities are the least of your environments to explore. Remnant, much like Darksiders before it, has fantastical enemies, worlds, characters, and story points to explore. From an old coot living in an airplane sniping treemen, to alternate worlds filled with Arabian deserts and alien-Egyptian robot slimy mummy things, Gunfire Games never has any shortage of interesting things to experience on your expansive quest. My personal favorite was the just dragon boss in the city!

The gameplay is very solid and overall, it just feels fun to squeeze rounds off with your weapons of choice. The game gives you three different archetypes to choose from: a rifleman, a shotgunner, and a brawler. I personally went for the rifleman so I could do some rootin’, tootin’, cowboy shootin’! You also have a blade to attack with up close when things get hairy, and it feels just as fun to use. Between healing and helpful items, restocking ammo, leveling up abilities, these things should all feel familiar to fans of the genre, and honestly, it all just works very well with very smooth polish, no complaints here!

The sound design and graphics are also well done. Quite a few times I jumped when a Root came out to attack me from behind a dilapidated building, and once again, because of Darksiders, Gunfire Games has the long-abandoned city design down to a t, and it looks fantastic. Just when you get a bit tired of that, they change it up on you for a new destination, allowing them to flex their similarly honed fantasy muscles and provide you with not just another Fallout-esque setting, but a multidimensional, almost Stargate styled one to keep you interested. I was never bored of my surroundings playing Remnant.

Remnant provides plenty of game time for both the average and experienced action-RPG player, and its new DLC, The Swamps of Corsus, will be guaranteed to give you even more time and challenge in red-teleporting crystal quest to fight every creepy beastie that gets in your way. There is definitely no better time to get into the game!

Here are The Swamps of Corsus Key Features:

  • New Mode – Survival: Fight for your life in this new rogue-like game mode! Start off your adventure with nothing but a pistol, some scrap and the skin on your back. Travel randomly through corrupted World Stones to different biomes, scrap-up gear, fight insanely-difficult bosses and test your endurance on how long you can resist The Root’s influence.
  • The Iskal Rise – The swamps of Corsus swarm with new content! Discover a new zone in Adventure Mode, fight new bosses, experience new stories, participate in new events, find new quests, and more.
  • Lock & Load – Pick up new items, new armor and skins, new weapons, new mods and new traits.
  • Armor Skins – By defeating bosses in Survival Mode, or the Hard and Nightmare difficulties in Campaign and Adventure Mode, earn Glowing Shards which you can use to purchase alternate armor skins for every piece of armor available in the game.

As I said, I am by no means an expert RPG or Souls Series player. I am however, a fan of well-designed gameplay and atmospheric style, which Remnant, and Gunfire Games as a whole, always provides. If you are looking for a new game that gives you bang for buck as a time sink with solid single player and multiplayer, you are a post-apocalyptic, fantasy, or sci-fi fan who wants their next fix, or you are a fan of the previous works of Gunfire Games, definitely check out Remnant: From the Ashes and start chopping down some trees with bullets today!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
