ANTHEM#9 Review for Steam by Matthew O’Toole

ANTHEM#9 by developer Koeda is a unique game that will definitely appeal to those looking for something more unique in the roguelite genre. It is a unique blend of deckbuilding, RPG-ability leveling, rouglites, and gem matching games (Bejeweled and anime fans rejoice!). If you are one for something different, and perhaps a bit genre busting, it may definitely be worth a look!

ANTHEM#9 sees players step into the role of one of three agents of a secret organization, the eponymous Anthem #9, as they seek to counter enemy agents bent on disrupting major world systems and peace. This is done via the deck-building system used to organize your abilities and attacks, which are upgradeable over time. Uniquely, you select the abilities you use in a timed sequencing by activating them through a series of jewel inputs. Essentially, you enter the inputs for the attacks in a specific order and then watch as your character unleashes a flurry of attacks upon enemy agents. Basically, it is unique and engaging puzzle combat!

There are various afflictions, such as poison, as well as other systems that all factor in aside from attack/defense. RPG fans will find a lot to love and upgrade here. For the most part, the gameplay is straightforward and easy to understand, with a step-by-step tutorial to help guide new players through (thought not every detail is always spelled out, i.e. sub ability and affliction effectiveness, so practice will make perfect). There are various modes and levels of difficulty for players accessibility, so there is definitely no true barrier to entry. The art style will most likely be compared to Persona, and there is definitely strong influence there. While Persona has more of a story and characters to it, if you are a fan of that art and presentation, then you will definitely find a lot to love in Anthem #9’s overall package.

Overall, ANTHEM#9 is a unique game with love for its influence and definitely cannot be called boring or by the numbers. With all honesty, it is not my preferred type of style or game, but I think it is a solidly made game with a lot of passion, and I highly recommend anyone interested in something unique, or a fan of the presentation style, take a look, as I do not think they will be disappointed!
Score: 8.5/10

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
