I hope you like getting STOMPED into the ground with challenge, because do we have a slobberknocker of a game for you today! Noita, by developer Nolla Games, is coming out of early access tomorrow, October 15th, and ready to show you just who is the boss around these gaming parts. Read on if you think you are ready for an epic and fatalistic wizard adventure in the center of the Earth!
Roguelikes have been one of those genres that I have heard throughout my many years of playing games, but have yet to really try or see. Dwarf Fortress seems to be the most well-known these days, but the genre itself goes back to the golden age of gaming in the late 1970s to mid-1990s. Known for their brutal, yet rewarding experiences, the games do not expect you to have a good time at first as you learn the ropes and constantly restart, yet, they draw you in more and more with their unique atmospheres, deluge of secrets and combinations to find, and the quest to see what can come next.
Noita will very much please veteran fans of the genre, as well as newcomers (like myself) with its every shifting and varied environments and great atmosphere. Starring as a very brave (and perhaps very foolish) wizard, you will blast all types of enemies into oblivion with your magic staves while constantly hoping not to get blown to smithereens by those same enemies. Co-starring against you are everyone’s favorite environmental hazards such as fire, ice, water, muddy water, toxic sludge, TNT, and of course, very long falls down shafts of earth with sudden stops at the bottom. Luckily, one of your primary skills is to be able to float for an amount of time, which mostly negates those sudden stops, but you still need to manage it well.
As mentioned, the pixelated graphics and atmosphere they create with ominous musical tracks will please nostalgic fans while also presenting a unique and haunting atmosphere to gamers of all types of genres. The gameplay is varied as you have a very large inventory screen (good luck filling it up until you reach peak experience!) with which you can create a multitude of wand combinations to better annihilate anyone who dares cross your path, and trust me on this, if it moves (and even if it does not), it wants you dead, so you better blast away to your heart’s content! There are so many combinations available that I know that I have barely scratched the surface. This is a game that you should be prepared to spend tens of hours on.
Overall, Noita is one of those games that, when given enough time and chance by its players, I think will wholeheartedly draw them in and leave them wanting more. You should prepare yourself to lose a lot, but in a roguelike such as this, one may argue that it is half the fun. Coming out of early access tomorrow, I highly recommend Noita if you are looking for a deep, challenging, and unique experience.
Graphics/Atmosphere – 9/10
Gameplay – 9.5/10
Audio – 9/10
Content – 10/10
Overall: 9.5/10

Steam Review
Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
