TombStar is a top down roguelike shooter. We tried out the beta for TombStar last week and saw what the developers had in mind with the game. TombStar is developed by Indie devs, Andy Sum and Marcus Grambau and published by No More Robots.
TombStar starts you off in a western looking desert-kinda setting with a small tutorial, and then we jump into the actual game. Where we start off in the first world, players are provided with a pistol that has unlimited ammo. There are certain amount of areas in a single world, which are randomly created every time we resurrect, and are unknown. It feels like Hades but more of shooter, each area has some amount of enemies. So far, every time we resurrected. there was a random amount of enemies and either the area was larger or smaller. Controls are simple aim and shoot, with a dodge functionality. Aiming is simple as it is very linear.
Each area might have rewards, but certain areas do not have any rewards. There are about two special areas in the world; one for chests and one for upgrade card slot machine. The keys and upgrade cards are randomly dropped when we kill certain enemies. Chests contain additional weapons, which is also randomized, but they are not with unlimited ammo.
There are some amazing amount of enemies in the game, even in the first level; some shooting pistols, some throw a knife and can dodge, etc. Because of the mix of enemies, sometimes we need different strategies to destroy them. Each enemy has a different attack style, which makes TombStar very challenging.
Overall, TombStar’s concept is very interesting, but feels like the amount of rewards seems to be randomized and feels very frustrating as sometimes a player kills a bunch of enemies, but might not even get a reward or sometimes after killing just a few enemies you get some chest keys or upgrade cards. Also, right now I tried to understand the upgrades but was not able to find any permanent upgrades like other roguelike games. I think TombStar is slated to release in 2021 so we are expecting that based on the player experience, there will be a bunch of updates that will be coming down the line and it would make the game more fun and replayable.
