World War Z x The Walking Dead Impressions: PAX East 2026

When Saber Interactive announced a crossover between World War Z and AMC’s The Walking Dead, the skepticism was real. We’ve seen TWD struggle in the gaming space before, but after diving into the 2026 update, I can confidently say this is the high-octane tribute fans have been waiting for.

The $9.99 DLC brings the heavy hitters: Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne, and Negan. Playing as Rick and Daryl feels especially authentic, thanks to Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus reprising their roles. While the voice-alikes for Michonne and Negan are a bit jarring if you’re a die-hard fan, their character models are spot-on.

The fan service extends to the gear, too. Wielding Michonne’s Katana or Negan’s infamous Lucille (which has a satisfyingly lethal “instant-down” perk for specials) adds a visceral layer to the melee combat that perfectly bridges the two universes.

The core of this update lies in three new story chapters: The Prison, Alexandria, and Grady Memorial Hospital. These aren’t just reskins; they fundamentally shift the gameplay loop. Saber replaced the signature “Zeke” swarms with traditional “Walkers”—they’re slower but no less lethal in tight quarters.

The addition of the Spiked Walker introduces a tactical wrinkle: you can’t just hack and slash your way through. These armored threats force you to knock them prone before you can land a killing blow, punishing players who get too comfortable with the usual crowd-control meta.

While the DLC is relatively short—clocks in at about two hours for a full run—the replayability is high thanks to WWZ’s solid class systems and the sheer novelty of seeing Alexandria on fire in such high fidelity. It’s a “timeline-bending” experience that prioritizes fun over canon, and at this price point, it’s a no-brainer for any co-op enthusiast. I will rate the update 7 stars.
