Absolutely beautiful pixel art, cunning combatants, brave heroes, and scornful quests with bountiful treasures and rewards can be found in Skul: The Hero Slayer. Developed by SouthPAW Games, and published by Neowiz Games, Skul: The Hero Slayer puts a new spin on the human race’s attack on the Demon King’s Castle by having the Adventurers join forces with the Imperial Army and the ‘Hero of Caerleon.’ The lone skeleton, Skul, who was the only demon not taken prisoner in the storming of the castle, is left to slay the heroes that set his village ablaze.
With the help of weakened demons and witches, Skul levels up his gear and gains rewards, and new skills and abilities to strengthen his fight against his enemies. The way that this game is set up is almost the perfect coupling of a creepy RPG and a platform game, with hand-to-hand combat as well as mainly melee combat. The enemies respawn randomly and can create an ambush if you stay in the same area for too long. Large bosses, such as ogres are sprinkled in with the regular enemies, making it almost impossible to break away from the fight once you’ve entered an area of the map, or have gone through a portal.
These everchanging and challenging maps will keep you on your toes and at the edge of your seat, never knowing what to expect next. In addition to his fierce and imposing fighting skills, Skul can gain new and exciting abilities depending on which skull he’s wearing, as they are interchangeable and he has the capacity to wear up to 2 at a single time. Each skull has its own unique attack range, speed, and power, allowing you to customize your combos based on your individual playing style.
At the end of every chapter, you will go head-to-head with massive and powerful bosses that have been corrupted by Dark Quartz, which is the epitome of the pain and hate of life itself, quite literally. Which makes some elements of the combat unforgiving, especially if you’re not going into the battle with a clear head space. This is a challenging game, but the benefits you reap from the gameplay are bountiful.
This is a game that I could play for hours and not be bored. The music, the storyline, the multitude of mechanics, and the sheer amount of unlockables/ items, among several other positive elements, make this game an enjoyable one for every type of player. So get ready to get your hands dirty with the blood of war in this action-packed platformer game. Enact revenge on thrill-seeking adventures with the swift swipe of your sword into their chests. Come prepared to battle with Skul: The Hero Slayer. This game whole-heartedly deserves a 9 out of 10.

Steam Review
I am an army veteran and currently a sophomore at Portland State University majoring in English. I have always looked to gaming as an outlet outside of my everyday life and a way to experiment with playing different types of games and take on new and exciting characters with different backgrounds. It's kind of like getting to become a new person every time you play a game.
