FIVE DATES Review for PS4

If we mentioned the most influential incident that happened in 2020, I believed the answer for most people is Covid-19. This deadly various changed the basis of our daily life. Can you imagine that almost all of the people wear a mask when they hang out? Can you imagine all of our meetings, classes switch to completely remote? The virus stretched the physical distance between people, but thanks to the development of online meetings, the distance between our hearts never gets closer before. Five Dates is a game developed by Wales Interactive and Good Gate Media, under this special circumstances. 

In Five Dates, the player acts as Vinny, a guy downloading a new dating app under Coronavirus quarantine. The five dates you have are Maya, Grace, Saffron, Shaina, and Paige. All of the five girls have different backgrounds, different interests, and different experiences. And what we should do is to dig inside through talking, try to know more about them, and finally to start with a new relationship.

You first need to choose three of them and start the first round of online video talk, and then choose two of the three. Finally narrow it down to only one. Whether you can set up a relationship is depending on some pop-up choice. You can set up your interests and background at the very beginning, this will change the topic you can provide during a video call. And one of the most interesting parts is that Vinny will update all the information with his best friend Callum, who is the source of humor in this game. His suggestions and reactions of each event are full of comical elements. To be honest, imagining and expecting what he will say about the situation is one of my most exciting parts of this game. 

As a FMV game, the most important part is the character design, people won’t spend their time with awful characters; luckily, Five Dates provides us with a powerful design, you can name out many famous names in this game. Georgia Hirst, Marisa Abela, Taheen Moda, etc. The other big part for this type of game is story, thanks to the director and writer, Paul Raschid. He gave us a totally different 5 girls, 5 different type of story, since you can only choose one at one round, sometimes you cannot wait to try to talk with other characters about their life and their interests. And there exists some special plot that is pretty close to our life right now, and will definitely make you give a knowing smile.  

There are some aspects that this game can improve upon. First is the length of each story, the communication with each character is not too long, you can finish one of them in one hour. The game will cost about 5 to 6 hours in total. From my perspective, Five Dates will be better if the main story is longer. Second is some improvement in the system – there is no save point through game process. If you want to switch to different characters, you have to restart from the very beginning, sometimes it will make people feel bored. 

Overall, Five Dates has a really good character design and genre and will give you a wonderful experience of digital dating. This game definitely worth it price and your time!
