Greetings Gamers, Greg Vander Velde here to talk about the virtual escape room experience, Rugrats: Search for the Losted Toys. The Escape Game has partnered with Nickelodeon’s Rugrats to bring you a very unique and immersive escape room experience. They offer two different ways to play the game; a standard in-person game with up to 12 players or a remote version where you can play from anywhere in the world with 4-8 players video chatting in.
Wait, a video chat powered escape room? How does that work? You may be asking. Well it’s all possible by a real live avatar in the escape room doing everything you command them to do. A person is walking around the escape room with a camera on their head so they can act as the group’s eyes, hands, and ears. There is also a second person acting as a host who can answer questions, give hints when needed, and help with any technical difficulties. Our host, Liz, was very energetic and made the whole process more fun as was our avatar, but I don’t remember his name. Regardless of in person or online, the players need to escape in an hour or less, before the adults come to check on the babies. There are quite a few puzzles that have to be solved in that time spanning multiple rooms ranging from simple crossword puzzles to environmental puzzles with multiple parts. The difficulty definitely increases throughout the adventure but since they prime your brain for solving puzzles at the beginning it seems like a natural progression.
Speaking of environments, when you or your avatar first step foot into this space, it all seems very immersive from the color pallets to the toys, even the props that are more or less common household objects. It’s clear that some people have really put in a lot of effort to make the whole experience unified and cohesive. It’s very strange to see places you’ve seen in a 2D cartoon brought to life in the real world but the creators have handled it very well.
So you may be asking is this just for Rugrats fans? I would say no, but someone familiar with the show, at the very least, will get more out of the experience. This experience on its own was a very fun escape room and I almost prefer doing it digitally since you get a really helpful dashboard of items, clues, and locks. So I can say if you are a fan of both escape rooms and the Rugrats are your thing now or bring back nostalgic memories this is definitely worth checking out.
This is a limited time event so if this sounds fun to you book it as soon as possible. This is a 30th anniversary event and you don’t want to wait another 30 years for something like this to come around again, do you? This escape room really was a blast and I really do recommend it if you like these types of things.
