September 9th, 2021 was the day Sony decided to drop their largest game presentation of the year. The experience was a little over 40 minutes and showed off a total of 18 games. Some we’ve known about and seen footage for… and others completely blew the internet’s socks off!
The presentation started with a very elaborate trailer for pretty much the PlayStation ecosystem. It seems more like a commercial we will be seeing on TV a lot more this year. Then Jim Ryan showed up to give a quick introduction. Now onto the games!
GAME 1 – “Knights of the Old Republic Remake” from Aspyr/Lucasfilm. Pretty much an announcement trailer with very little shown, but the announcement was enough to get us hyped!
GAME 2 – “Project EVE” from Shit Up. A game no one has heard about with a very extensive trailer that looks pretty rad. There is even a good amount of gameplay footage. It’s fairly rare when you see a game announced this far along and they attach gameplay to show right away. Looking forward to learning more about this. No release date was given.
GAME 3 – “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands from Gearbox Software. We have seen trailers to this at prior events but we now finally get a good look at the gameplay. Coming March 25th, 2022.
GAME 4 – “Forspoken” from Square Enix and Luminous Productions. We’ve only seen brief footage in the past when the game was announced, but now we learn more about the story and get a good idea of what the gameplay is like. This has great potential. No set release date, just a Spring 2022 window.
GAME 5 – “Rainbow Six: Extraction” from Ubisoft. More footage of a game we’ve already seen a bunch of, I found this to be one the more redundant entries to this showcase. The game will be out soon, January 2022.
GAME 6 – “Alan Wake Remastered” from Remedy Entertainment. This one is very exciting. A game that was only available on Xbox is now coming to PC and PlayStation consoles with revamps graphics and quality of life game improvements. And it comes out less than a month away, October 5th, 2021.
GAME 7 – “Grand Theft Auto V & GTA Online” from Rockstar Games. Nothing really new was shown. This is a game that originated on the PlayStation 3 and still one of the biggest money makers in the industry. Basically, an announcement to keep the game relevant and bringing it to the latest generation consoles. Coming March 2022.
GAME 8 – “Ghostwire: Tokyo” from Bethesda/Tango Gameworks. The developers of the popular Evil Within franchise this game has been shown off by Sony a couple times now, but this time with a lot more gameplay. A bit surprised there is no release date or release window, just 2022.
GAME 9 – “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” from Square Enix/Eidos Montréal. A game fairly recently announced but is quickly being over saturated with new footage and updates. I guess that’s fair because it’s coming quite soon. October 26th, 2021.
GAME 10 – “Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodhunt” from Sharkmob AB. For a game we have seen over and over again, I feel like we don’t see much new stuff from it. I don’t know how this keeps showing up at events, especially when all we got for a date is 2022.
GAME 11 – “Deathloop” from Bethesda/Arkane Studios. Pretty much the last game that slowed the pacing down for this showcase. Sony has shown it off at nauseam at this point. It’s actually just days away. September 14th, 2021.
GAME 12 – “Kid A Mnesia Exhibition” from Radiohead/Epic Games. I’ll be honest, I have no clue what I saw. Is this even a game? Is this some event concert? Either way the brief trailer had me intrigued and we will experience it soon. November 2021.
GAME 13 – “Tchia” from Awaceb. Sony sheds some light on a smaller title. With a peaceful and nice-looking esthetic with gameplay elements that reminded me a lot of “Breath of the Wild.” No date was given, but I’m excited to learn more about it.
GAME 14 – “Uncharted Legacy of Thieves” from Naughty Dog. A remastered collection of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” and “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.” Both games were already beautiful so I’m excited to see what the enhancements on PS5 will be like. This will also mark their debut on PC. Coming early 2022.
The trailers take a pause and Herman Hulst comes on to speak briefly and thanking the Sony PlayStation fans.
GAME 15 – “Marvel’s Wolverine” from Insomniac Games. This is the one that shocked us all! No one saw it coming and everyone is stoked that it’s even a thing. It’s merely a brief announcement trailer and development is still early on so if I had to guess this would be a 2023-2024 release.
GAME 16 – “Gran Turismo 7” from Polyphony Digital. A flashy new trailer showing sleek cars, gameplay, all with sweet music. Due to the pandemic this has been delayed a few times, but it looks like we got a release window of March 2022.
GAME 17 – “Marvel’s Spider-man 2” from Insomniac Games. Another showstopper from Insomniac. We knew this game was coming, but they made it official. As well as teasing us with what we can expect. Release window 2023.
GAME 18 – “God of War: Ragnarök” from Santa Monica Studio. Capping the showcase off with one of their biggest franchises and while this is the first time, we get a look at the game; we are seeing quite a bit! No date was given but is expected to release next year.
And that wraps a showcase. Pretty solid if I say so myself. The hype meter never dipped too low and the pacing was quite good. Here’s to a fantastic 2022 and beyond for PlayStation!
