Introduction/Information about game
The game, Against the Storm, by developer Eremite Games and publisher Hooded Horse, releases via Steam Early Access and GOG on November 1, 2022. This game is a strategy simulation game where the player must rebuild a civilization while struggling against an apocalyptic storm. This genre of games can be fun for me when I am bored, but not usually my first pick to play with. I would say that this game is a very fun simulation game thanks to its strategic elements.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Against the Storm is similar to normal simulation games. When the player starts the game, a cutscene will play. The cutscene briefly explains how a queen sent out viceroys to rebuild a civilization during the apocalyptic storm. After the cutscene plays, the game will put the player in the middle of a forest with limited supplies. This is how simulation games would usually start the player out. The player will be put into a tutorial to learn how to play the game. Something I found interesting about the tutorial for this game is what they actually teach the player. From what I got out of the tutorial, the game will tell the player how to move the camera and tell them to build a settlement to help store wood. In terms of help on how to rebuild, that was pretty much it.
For players who have not touched a simulation game, this would be a very big problem. However, I believe that if a player has played at least one simulation game and understands the basics of one, then they will be fine. One important piece of information the game will tell the player is that they must meet the Queen’s demands in their development of their civilization. If the player fails to meet the Queen’s demands before the time runs out, the Queen will become impatient, which will result in consequences. From what I played of the game, I have not failed to meet any of the Queen’s demands, so I am unsure what her consequences will bring. However, the game made it very clear that the player should avoid these consequences as much as they can. The game will help the player meet their first demand on time. After that, however, the game will no longer help. From that point on, the game truly starts. I like this aspect very much because I feel this gives the game strategic value. This game mechanic, along with others, adds an element of strategy to this seemingly normal simulation game.
Final thoughts
Overall, the game Against the Storm is a fun strategy simulation game. I believe with the game’s added strategy elements, it stands out from most standard simulation games. If you are the kind of person who enjoys simulation games and loves strategy game mechanics and elements, then this is the game for you. Players can buy this game on Steam when it releases on the platform on November 1, 2022.
