Lately we have had a bunch of great cyberpunk-world games come up, and some don’t live up to the expectation, but there are some that provide a unique gameplay and story that you can never forget about.
Recently we played ANNO: Mutationem, which is another unique cyberpunk RPG game developed by ThinkingStars and published by Lightning Games.
ANNO: Mutationem starts off introducing our protagonist, Ann, who lives in an apartment and there are a bunch of character introductions around the house related to her family. The game does a great job at slowly opening up the whole world so players are not completely overwhelmed by the amount of things to do. The world of ANNO: Mutationem is very dynamic and you see things happening around with NPCs to interact with and a bunch of side missions that don’t feel repetitive at all.
During the first main objective, players are introduced to the battle, which gives a good tutorial. Battles are all in 2D environments, which include jumping around and using melee and ranged weapons. Over the course of the game the player will be introduced with additional skills and provide a unique way to achieve victory in battles.
The graphics are amazing even though the game is pixel style for characters and a mix of 2D and 3D movements around the world, which is filled with colors. And combat is unique in that it allows you to utilize different skills, weapons and combos to achieve great battle satisfaction. On top of weapons there are shields that can be used to block some incoming damage. There are about 5 different cities that player can travel to with 3 of them pretty dynamic and one of them is an abandoned town and one of the areas is like an arena colosseum. At a couple of towns there are huge underground areas that players can explore. Also there are fast travel areas that allow players to jump back to towns and get back to doing some side quests if players are exhausted from the exploration.
The game is filled with side activities like collecting posters, cyber nekos and doing bartending, which provides a sense of fulfillment. There are also battle tournaments that players can do. There is a RPG-like skill progression that players can unlock as they get additional weapons and upgrade items.
ANNO: Mutationem is amazing, but there is some exhausting exploration as well because outside of battle areas, there are no sprint capabilities and kind of going around the huge underground areas definitely feels like a lot. Also there are some bugs that cause the experience to be a little bit on the down side, for example one time the game got stuck on the menu because it stopped taking input from the controller, which made me restart the game.
Also the story over time loses its touch, especially towards the end. Even though the battle and exploring areas sometimes provide a lot of unique materials and background lore of the game and makes up for the story.
Overall, ANNO: Mutationem definitely is one of the most unique cyberpunk-world RPG like games and definitely a fun world to see growing. I would definitely rate it 8.5/10.
