Ashwalkers, developed by Nameless XIII and published by Dear Villagers and 24 Entertainment, is a, linear story based survival game. Ashwalkers is setup in a post-apocalyptic world that is covered in ashes.
The survival is one of the core elements of the game, and on top of that the decisions you take in the game affect the outcome of the objectives. Overall, the gameplay is interesting as you control 4 characters that part of a squad that is trying to find the answers to survive in the current world. The characters are affected by the energy, hunger, temperature, and health. The world is very linear as there is not much exploration to do here and you just move in a linear direction and only have choices to you during the journey that can be different are based on diverging paths.
As you do the exploration, you can retrieve certain types of items such as either food, wood, health packs, which are used in the recovering the specific stats and can be used during setup of campfire where you can either allow the team-members to provide them with fire to keep them worm, food for hunger, or health kits to increase the health points. There is one additional option to schedule what you can do during the campfire where you can provide the team mates to do certain activities like resting, talking, or keeping guard, which have some additional impact, like regaining some energy or changing the mood.
In addition to some survival elements, there are additional things like when you move on, there are certain areas where it’s either humans or animals that you can interact with. Certain things you do can change the outcome in the future, like there is an area where you can fight a wolf, but you also have the option to sneak past it. If you fight the wolf and grab the souvenir from the animal, you encounter a hideout, which asks for you to show the proof of courage and where you can show the wolf’s material to stay friendly with the humans. And there are similar situations that we encounter throughout Ashwalkers. Overall, the story is intriguing, and it keeps you completely attached to the game.
The only complaint that I have with the game is that during the gameplay, the camera movement is not very dynamic as it gets stuck sometimes during the movement and the exploration is not that intuitive, as sometimes you just keep on walking slowly and there is nothing there on the route. But Ashwalkers does have some interesting and new ways that have been introduced, which include the campfire and text-based decisions that change the outcome.
If some of the above-mentioned things have been considered this would have been on the list of a great game. I would rate Ashwalkers 7 stars out of 10.
