BARON: Fur is Gonna Fly Review for Nintendo Switch

Affix your flight goggles and try not to shed too much on the seats, for you, my furry friend, are about to be airborne! In this worldwide quarantine, what better way to escape this unprecedented weirdness than as an animal pilot, swerving through the skies, taking out sheep? That’s right, you keep scratching your head…I wish you luck in topping that tactic in time-passage. BARON: FUR IS GONNA FLY for Nintendo Switch is dogMelon Pty Ltd’s zany new action-packed treat.

Your typical aerial combat game this is not. This loose reenactment of the Great War enlists animal pilots to fight the good fight. Choose from eight pilots, each with their own distinct personality, customize your biplane for battle, and you are cleared for takeoff! What combat title would be complete without some bombastic artillery? This one piles high onto the outlandish plate with a more non-traditional variety of weapons: stinky fish and flamethrowers, to name a few.

BARON: FUR IS GONNA FLY is a game that absolutely must be played with the sound on! I give you my Kendra guarantee that you are one hundred percent missing out on charming comedy gold if you skip out on the tunes. I implore you to listen carefully to the lyrics, as they are make-you-chuckle-out-loud clever. The writers did an excellent job with the humor—gold stars are certainly deserved! I’m still humming these silly little ditties.

The developers boast a prompt learning curve with the flying…I don’t entirely agree. Now I make it no secret that certain games best me for quite some time before I get into the swing of things, but for simple mechanics, there is a lack of intuitiveness to steering your aircraft.  Don’t expect any kindness from your comrades if you’re an aviation failure *raises hand*, as you will literally be told over and over again to “watch for the ground,” so constantly being berated for your short comings will be incentive to well…not be so terrible. Some games make you want to rage quit when you keep dying (looking at you, Bloodborne), but the level of difficulty in this game is certainly doable for beginners and hardcore gamers alike.

On a cleverness scale, this is easily five stars. Action packed cartoon shenanigans will brighten even the worst of days. The different modes offer enough of a variation in play to keep you bouncing from one to the other for a decent amount of time. Will you eventually grow bored if you are playing this solo? Most likely, this definitely isn’t a sixty-hour rabbit hole to spiral into. To truly capitalize on the zany entertainment BARON: FUR IS GONNA FLY has to offer, local play and multiplayer modes are where it’s at.

All in all, if you are on a quest for a light-hearted way to pass the time alone or with company, this is a solid choice—certainly a title I would come back to in my Switch library when I need my fur flying fix.
